Juan Mesa, 28, and Alejandro Moreno, 39, Both Had Criminal Records PALM DESERT Both men who died on "Black Friday" in a shootout inside the Toys "R" Us store on Highway 111 at Fred Waring Drive had criminal records, and one of them is believed to have been a gang member, authorities said Wednesday.

Juan Meza, 28, of Cathedral City, had a tattoo that read "VMV," which indicates that he was a member an Indio-area gang called Varrio Mecca Vineyards, Riverside County District Attorney's Office spokesman Michael Jeandron said.

Alejandro Moreno, 39, of Desert Hot Springs, was also killed in the shooting.

Meza pleaded guilty in March and in November 2007 to being a felon in possession of a firearm. In September 2005, he pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon, and in 2002, he pleaded guilty to possessing a controlled substance for sale while armed, according to court records.

Records show that Moreno had a criminal record spanning back to 1998, when he pleaded guilty to inflicting corporal injury on a spouse. Charges of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and willfully harming a child were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

Moreno and Meza shot each other to death as parents and children were shopping for holiday gifts, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez said. Two guns were recovered near the men's bodies.

Witnesses said the men were with two women who got into a fight that escalated into the fatal shootings, which sent terrified shoppers and their children scrambling for cover.

Good riddance. They would have ended up in prison or dead by violence eventually. Those kind of guys always come to bad ends.

“And why is it “troubled” pasts, rather than “criminal” pasts”

Well, lefties say that they’re victims of their environment-being victimized by nasty gringos, jackbooted policemen, eeevil big business, and cruel Republicans;)

I’ve heard reporters opining along the lines of “That’s the problem with having all these guns on the streets. See how this escalated because they had guns?”. As usual, they miss the point. These were bad people. As felons, they clearly were not carrying legally anyway. A new gun law would not have prevented this.

And why is it "troubled" pasts, rather than "criminal" pasts (not to mention presents, but fortunately not futures)?

Same reason that Simon and Garfunkle didn't sing Bridge over Criminal Waters ... it doesn't sound as psycho-spiffy. And we all know that psycho-spiffy is what all good J-school students want to achieve.

And trashy girlfriends. “Let’s go to the toy store, honey, and bring your gun in case we meet Ana and that creep she goes out with.”

I haven’t been to Toys R Us in years. The only one near us closed.

(Good for you, btw. Getting a pistol and a license is on my list of things to do when I’m not having a baby.)

Here's my favorite CCW weapon:

Taurus Millenium Pro. Comes in .32 through .45 caliber. Small, lightweight and affordable.

Pretty! Can you FReepmail me order information? OldTax-lady will be sending us Contributions for Christmas, and Anoreth wants a pistol. She won’t be 21 for a while, but she can go to gun range in Monroe on her own after she’s 18 in March.
