even hear some Christmas carols in schools, You just have to get out of the big cities. All three of my children's public school Christmas concerts have always featured religious songs, some of them even in latin.

I humbly propose that all Christian freepers start writing it as CHRISTmas, and even pronouncing it with the long I, as in Christ. It takes a little practice but soon it will become habit.
My whole family does it now. I always hoped it would spread into a nationwide phenomenon.
