Why is it folks spend the Advent season wishing each other Merry Christmas, but spend the Christmas Season wishing each other Happy New Year?

Why is it folks spend the Advent season wishing each other Merry Christmas, but spend the Christmas Season wishing each other Happy New Year?

Worse than that, for almost half of the rest of the Christmas season they're grousing that the holidays are over.
