D.C. Bars Allowed to Stay Open 'Round the Clock During Inauguration Week

WASHINGTON -- The D.C. Council has approved emergency legislation allowing the city's bars, nightclubs and restaurants to stay open around the clock for four days around President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration.

The bill allows any establishment with a liquor license to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. and serve food at any hour from Jan. 17 until the morning of Jan. 21.

The council approved the measure in a 9-4 vote Tuesday and was pushed by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington. The organization says the inauguration is a rare event that is worthy of special rules.

Actually, I think this is a big mistake. Everything about this election and inauguration reminds me of what I’ve read about Andrew Jackson’s inauguration day.

Good thing DC has such strict gun control laws. Otherwise, all-night, multi-night partying could get dangerous there. /s

Is it that Zerobama's supporters can celebrate, or so Conservatives can drink to forget McCain's loss!!

It's so the resulting riots can spark a 'national emergency' 'forcing' the new ruler to impose martial law. </tin foil>

I think I’ll open up one of those roadside vendor vans to fence stolen wallets and purses, and the credit cards and ID’s, too. I should make a killing, and the DC police are nothing to fear. Their clearance rate on MURDER is about 30%. Many people don’t even bother reporting robberies and burgleries except for insurance claims because there’s no hope the cops will ever find anything.

Will the Metro run trains and buses around the clock during the entire week or will it be open season for DUIs inside the Beltway?

As one who works in DC, let me just say this:

While I don't expect any FReepers to attend the coronation, if you have friends and family that will, have them understand that it will not be pleasant or safe by any means.

Better to stay home, trust me....

The reason the bars close at any time at all is because they want to control the populace. Now just because the “one” is going to be President, the laws they came up with don’t apply, nice.

The bill allows any establishment with a liquor license to serve alcohol until 5 a.m.

IF they have to stop at 5, it isn't "around the clock."

A lot of people are going to get a real education. I’ll be surprised if a riot doesn’t break out.

I don’t know too many bars that don’t want to make a lot of money.

They won't be raking in the tips with that crowd...

Somebody has to be there to report on the drive-bys. Be ready to hit the deck. Straight Outta Compton!

On a good day, DC is a hard place to get around in. What with street closings, detours, close-offs of public buildings and all the other associated problems, even if nothing out of the ordinary happens, it's still not worth the trouble. Forget driving, even walking around will be tough.

If you know someone who is going to venture out, tell them to come prepared. Don't eat food from street vendors, expect long lines at public restrooms (if you can find one), do not expect to get a good view of anything and forget seeing monuments, etc.

Don’t you understand how dangerous it is to have drunks on the road at 4 am? It is much better to limit them to 2 am.

Actually I’m surprised that there aren’t restaurants open 24 hours in DC... that they are not allowed by law to serve food at 5 am?

But since they are expecting an influx of 1 million people there will be long lines for food and drink. They should issue emergency street-vendor permits.
