Costco says 'No' to Christmas...literally
AFA Email | December 2, 2008 | Staff

Costco has 520 stores nationwide. But you will not find "Christmas" in a single store.

That's because Costco says it will not use the term "Christmas" on its website or in its stores. Instead, Costco is telling customers it purposely chooses to use the generic "holiday" verbiage. You know, they stock holiday gifts, not Christmas gifts.

Last week, a customer wrote to Costco and asked this direct question – "Does Costco use the word 'Christmas' in your store advertising or on any signs anywhere in your stores during the Christmas season? That's a pretty simple question, yes or no."

Kory Rosacrans, staff manager for Costco replied, "I guess the answer would be No."

Rosacrans said, "Costco does not advertise on television, on radio or in print like other retailers. We only advertise by mailings and e-mail messages sent directly to our members who have paid for the privilege of shopping with us."

Costco wants you to do your "Christmas" shopping with them, while refusing to recognize that Christmas even exists.

I don't care whether they have a sign that says "Merry Christmas."

Neither do I because that platitude is most often used in a secular way anyway (i.e. buy and open presents, etc). If Costco actually had an anti-Christian theme going I would be much more concerned (quite possible the Costcos in the Bay Area pander to homos -- that sort of thing).

I don’t shop at stores that charge an admission fee.

It somehow makes it better when your admission fee is built into the cost of goods that you buy?

You really should not try to extrapolate what is in another persons heart. I am offended that CHRIST is under attack at every turn in America. You are free to continue to not care but do not presume to speak for me or my positions.

Offended by what? Seriously?

What is offensive about the fact that the store doesn’t have a sign out front (or whatever) that says “Merry Christmas?”

FYI! Mr. Rosacrans is being politically correct! I am sure that he would rather say Christmas than Holidays, most people around this time of year would rather do that but he is a manager of a major corporation. Therefore he needs to be politically correct to satisfy all the needs of all the members of Costco. People who shop at Costco are not customers but they are members...you join Costco you don’t just shop there. So...for Mr. Rosacrans props to you and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

They sell quality products from all over. It's not like Wal-mart. Their return policy is great. I wish they didn't donate 0.02% of their net income to Democrats, but there are more important battles to fight.

I am offended by CHRIST being taken out society due to PC leftist mantras that have made being a Christian something unclean to the masses. The fact that you have to ask that question is astounding in itself.

Mr. Rosacrans shouldn't let his apparent distaste for a Christian holiday interfere with his corporate profits. Neither Mr. Saks nor Mr. Lazarus did.

As far as paying dues to shop in a chain that doesn't apparently care it's Christmas, some will stop paying and shopping and let you carry the ball.

How does putting up a sign that says "Merry Christmas" change that, particularly when the store already sells a crap load of Christmas merchandise?

Does one really walk into a store that has a row of fifty Christmas trees and think, "Why, what possible reason could there be for this row of fake pine trees? Hmm... Wait! There's a sign that says 'Merry Christmas!' These must be Christmas trees! This is all beginning to make sense."

If you bothered to check, there are over 200 items on CostCo's website with the name "Christmas" on them.

Screw Costco and Target. These are stores that appeal to the volvo driving same sex marriage crowd.

That's kind of funny. Those types of people would not be caught dead at Costco or Target.

The question with Target is their refusal to allow the Salvation Army to set up in front of there stores.

Walmart does.

I make it a point of going to Walmart at least once during the Christmas season just to contribute.
Normally don’t shop there.

The Salvation Army subject is also false. Target does allow the Salvation Army to solicit in front of their stores.

WalMart bowed to Planned Parenthood and now sells the “morning after” abortion pill. It bugs me how people lionize them and equate shopping there with being “a real American.” I used to spend a boatload there, but haven’t shopped there in a few years because of their anti-life policies.

The good news is that there are plenty of places to buy superior or identical items for prices. I don’t have to support communist China or get substandard quality items — it turns out that some Walmart items aren’t such a good deal.

As an aside, I periodically send Walmart an email telling them about my personal boycott. I’ve yet to get a response. With te amount of money I used to spend there I am confident that I offset a decent amount of profit that they get from RU-486.

Thankyou!! I am a Costco employee and I have been dealing with this crap all day. Picture this...I am being yelled at for the BS that Costco does not celebrate Christmas while sitting near a huge Christmas tree covered with gifts for children who have very little this day and age. Sitting there knowing how well they treat us as employees and what a blessing they are in so many peoples lives. I say shame on everyone for being so shallow and selfish during the holiday season!! Merry Christmas from Costco!!!
