WSFA 12 News first reported a proposed tax for Alabama farmers on livestock gas emissions last week, and we've learned new information.
Since the report the Enviromental Protection Agency asked for comments from the agriculture industry with a deadline of the day after Thanksgiving. The outcry has been heard - loud a clear.
Agriculture & Industries Commissioner Ron Sparks thanked Alabama farmers and consumers for making their voices heard regarding the proposed tax on livestock gas emissions. The proposal announced by the EPA was an advance announcement in anticipation of an actual regulation that would likely be brought up for government approval in 2009.
Sparks' office said many farmers, consumers, and agricultural organizations and state departments were highly critical of the proposal including harsh comments from United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer.

Well, they'll put a tax on that sooner or later.
With Obama in office, what next?
:-)
I guess they decided to hold it in a while longer.
Commissioner Sparks eh.....
Lets hope he don't get downwind of a heard of cattle....
Could be a nasty spontaneous combust in the offing.
Funniest...headline...to...date!!!! :-)
“Passing Gas” taxes?!
How about “Breaking Wind” taxes??
Congress sure is full of bloviating old farts, bet they could add a bunch of $$$$$$$$$$$ to the national treasury, LOL!!!
LOL, that headline could have been written a little better. :)
Some years ago this idea was floated by a Kiwi (New Zealand) politician. I was certain that NZ had passed it until a kind NZ FReeper corrected me.
Frankly, this is such a loony idea, I can’t imagine ANYONE in their RIGHT MIND believing that farting cows are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions causing “Glow Bull Warming”!!!
The fact that algore bought into is proof enough of its idiocy. Farmers in America need to make it painfully clear to the political elites where the pricey food they shove down their pieholes comes from.
And I mean BEFORE it gets to the grocery store!!
Can you imagine meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time?
“What do you do, John?”
“Oh, I’m a fart tax collector.”
I see other comedians beat me to it. Did they really proofread that headline?
But will come soon enough with a Democrat heading up the executive branch and the house and senate democrat majorities. Breathing tax will soon follow.
I thought it was written perfectly. :-D
I thought it was written perfectly. :-D
No flatulation without representation.
He should be taxed for the gas coming from his mouth not to mention his bloated backside.
Bart.
Memo to self: Never get into an elevator full of Cows.
Like Hillay, Nancy Et. Al.
Wow. A fart tax? What’s next?
