The difference between the US system and a parliamentary democracy is that, in the latter, events can turn on a dime (as Mrs Thatcher discovered in 1990). In Canada, in October, Stephen Harper's Conservative Party was returned to office - not with a majority in the House of Commons but nevertheless with an increased minority. By contrast, Canada's formerly "natural governing party", the Liberals, got their lowest percentage of the vote since 1867, shriveling away to their Toronto heartland with a few redoubts in the Maritimes and the Yukon. Stephane Dion, an unpopular eco-obsessive with an ascetic mien and poor English presiding over an impoverished party trying to sell the nation an unwanted "Green Shift", immediately announced his resignation as leader, and it seemed the Tories would have the luxury of watching the Loyal Opposition tearing itself apart all winter electing his replacement.
Now, a mere six weeks later, what David Frum calls "the Harper government"* is about to fall, and the fellow set to replace him as Prime Minister is the October flopperoo Dion, reborn as leader of a freakshow coalition of Canada's three opposition parties - the soft left, the hard left and the separatist left, all of whom have figured out that what they have in common (unbounded love of big government) is bigger than what divides them. Which is true. Quebec separatism is mostly one almighty bluff, a giant racket by which the francophone minority screws out of English Canada a hugely disproportionate share of the spoils. The Bloc Quebecois are separatists who have no interest in separating: no matter how wide you open the stable door, the flea-bitten old nag refuses to bolt. Granted all that, it's weird to see the Liberals, until recently the most electorally successful party in the western world, reduced to

the American social right, pro-lifers and the secular conservatives...have completely forgotten that what they have in common is bigger than what divides them.
Not this time.
:-)
You country needs you!
Bring along cuddles ( Yukon King) , but for heavens sakes, don't feed him. He has to be very , very hungry in order to sink his teeth into such putrid flesh!
Rip of those lefties' pants, flence the flesh off their legs with extreme prejudice, and while your at it, take their family jewels , but I doubt they have any. All they have is a herd instinct, and the Conservative predators hover. The stampede is about to begin!
"THROW UP YOUR HANDS!" You leftist prigs!
( Imagine socialist pussy governments in the USA and Canada simultaneously. The likes of Putin and Ahminajihad will bounce these lefty pussies off the boards repeatedly and knock the shite right out of them, accomplishing what we could not. And then we will have to get rid of the whole damned lot! CELEBRATE!)
Could Harper make a bigger comeback after losing power? As in political realignment?
I loved this description.
Mark Steyn is great!
Bump for Yukon King!

I think in the end this will be the final blow to the idiot left-wing Canadian parties trying to separate themselves in elections. They are now, as they have always been... one party and should have combined before the election instead of this coup after the people chose Prime Minister Harper.
Talk about sore losers, sheesh!!!! This country has now become a dictatorship where the votes of the public are cast out like yesterday’s trash.
Realignment with who?
LOL!
My pleasure, Sunkin Civ.
Mark Steyn is great.

Harper will rope a dope these lefty idjits for a while and then call another election.Thats not losing power.
Do you think he will lose power in another election?
NOPE!
Say " Majority Government" slowly and clearly.
LOL.
I thought (until I heard news update about the idjit coalition) that Harper was probably out for a while at least. But I hope he sticks around either way.
CBC going very scatty, but seasoned old pros that they are, laying back carefully. Why, there was the well seasoned Don Newman. He is prowling the corridors. He spots a well known Liberal and says "Brian"( pause) then in a higher pitched voice, "Brian" and over comes the Liberal. Tingle running up the leg here.
Now they are allowing without challenge, the mantra that Stephen Harper is a bully. The Liberals and the NDP are trying the same tactic that served the Democrats so well. Keep on repeating a smear and it will stick. Yeah, Bush did it, It is Bush. Then it gains a life of it's own.
