Laura and I send our condolences to the Chabad-Lubavitch family and all those honoring the lives lost in this tragedy.
The compassionate individuals of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement dedicate their lives to sharing G-ds teachings with people throughout the world, offering strength, hope and guidance in the unique spirit of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory. Through countless acts of love and kindness, the lost members of the Chabad-Lubavitch community in Mumbai represented the best of the human spirit, and their memories will live on in the hearts and souls of those they touched.
It is impossible for us to make sense of the violence of the Mumbai terrorist attack, yet we offer our deepest sympathy to the Chabad-Lubavitch community during this difficult time. We pray that you will be comforted by your fond memories of those lost, encouraged by their noble legacy, sustained by your faith, and lifted by the support of your loved ones.
May G-d bless you and all those affected by these horrific attacks.
George W Bush
Not too familiar with the subject, but IIRC the Lubavitch movement and the Satmar Hasdic group (from which the victims came) do not always see eye to eye on theology—sort of like to different denominations.
So, Bush commending the Lubavitch movement is certainly OK; but did he make a faux pas in lumping everyone all together?
(Another mistake by the White House staff...?)
“Not too familiar with the subject,”
Ooops! My mistake. Rabbi Teitelbaum, who was also killed in Mumbai, was from the Satmar group; but the rabbi and his wife who were killed were Lubavtich.
Silly, but ignorant question . . . why don't you spell out God?
You could write it out if you had to, but we try not to so that G-d’s name doesn’t end up being disrespected on the material it is written on.
I wouldn’t consider it being disrespected when you use it properly. It’s only when it’s taken in vain that it is disrespectful.

Ahhhh, so this is a Jewish custom?
More like a “safe harbor in the law” than a mere custom.
One can always count on President and Mrs. Bush to show the best of taste. (Old President and Mrs. Bush, too.) That may seem like a shallow comment, or a shallow characteristic, but I think it’s a sign of good character in the President to be able to offer sincere sympathies to others without making it all about himself.
