Women Smokers Lose 14.5 Years Off Life Span
During Lung Cancer Awareness Month in November, female smokers should take advantage of available resources, pick a quit day, and start taking steps toward kicking the habit, urges The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
Even though smoking takes an average of 14.5 years off women's lives, almost one in five American women age 18 and older smokes.
"The damaging effects of smoking on women are extensive, well-documented, and can be observed from the cradle to the premature grave," Dr. Sharon Phelan said in an organization news release. She helped develop ACOG's smoking cessation materials for health care providers.
"Smoking is a harmful habit that negatively affects nearly every organ in the body. There's just no good reason not to quit," she said.

So do men, but no one really cares about that.
Gee, my Mom smoked and lived to be 91. I don’t think she would have wanted to be 105.
Excellent....I hope my mom can make it that long.
My mom died 11 years ago at age 57. She started smoking at age 13. Heavily at 18. Emphysema at age 50. Cancer and brain tumor at 57.
Smoking was one of the dumbest things I ever did. Quitting was one of the more intelligent decisions, though.
I wonder if the average time stolen from those people was greater than 14.5 years.
Smoking is harmful, but I suspect it affects diferent people differently. Some will get emphysema and some won’t and while it is harmful to all, many live long lives.
My mom died of cancer at 47, lived healthy, never smoked. Both my grandmothers smoked into their 80’s and died in their mid 90’s. One grandfather died of a heart attack early, the other in his 80’s, a pipe smoker.
It is a legal activity that should be left to the adult’s discrimination.
And before all the health insurance issue arguments arise..over eating, riding motorcycles and just life in general is dangerous.
The whole gynecologists concerned about smoking thing is freaking me out.
They say if you smoke after sex you should probably slow down...
Uh, butt-slammers lose over twenty years off their average life expectancy...why don’t these ‘experts’ state their opposition to homosexuality?
pah 14.5 years not in diapers, in filthy nursing homes, or wandering off and getting lost. Now I can’t speak for everyone but I’m perfectly content to pass on when I get very old say about 30.
People who smoke are less likely to eat healthy. If everyone stopped smoking today, life expectency would rise, but it not as much as some believe. The main problem with these smoking studies is that there is no precise control group. Of course, if you were in a high school science class you would fail for such a poorly conducted experiment. For "scientists" living off of federal grants, however, scientific method comes second to political correctness.
Whoa. Interesting. Thanks. Glad I never started. I already have enough other challenges.
Smoking seems illogical, as no other animals wad leaves and inhale their exhaust. That said, I expect that soon enough we shall see an anti cancer pill made from nicotine. I gave up smoking twenty years ago after a hurricane destroyed my city. I couldn’t get to a store to replenish the idiotic habit, and thought that it might be wise to give it up completely. I missed a nightly smoke for a couple of weeks, and then was glad to be shed of the noxious plant.
My husband’s cousin died today of cancer, she was 59, didn’t smoke, I don’t think she drank much either. Her MIL is in a nursing home and will probably die in a few days of cancer, she didn’t smoke but she drank a good amount of gin everyday.
My mother had Alzheimer’s, it was awful, I wouldn’t want that for sure. My dad smoked until he was about 70 and died when he was 78, just fell over with a stroke, what a way to go.
Offspring of Feminazi’s lose 100% of their lifespan!
I agree with your post almost 100 per cent.
I only disagree with one point. I think the poor eating habits in this country are shared by both smokers and non-smokers. If it's cheap...and more importantly...easy, that's what folks will eat. There is a move to eating in a more healthy manner, but it hasn't overtaken the bulk of the population yet.
Even more than the smoking hazard, I think the preservatives and hormones in food, additives in water and a sedentary (for many) lifestyle causes more health risk.
