Fireplace police on patrol; smoke can draw fine
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 20, 2008 | Steve Rubenstein and Grant junkie

The fireplace police descended on the Bay Area on Wednesday.

For the first time ever, residential fires are illegal under a new law, passed in July, that bans home burning on winter season Spare the Air days.

The first such ban took effect at noon. Seventy inspectors from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District planned to spend the day and evening patrolling residential neighborhoods, looking for telltale chimney wisps.

Violators will get warnings by mail. Repeat offenders face fines of as much as $2,000.

The fireplace police say they are determined to keep law and order in the living room.

"We're serious," said district spokeswoman Kristine Roselius. "This is a major health threat. The weather conditions are such that smoke is trapped closer to the ground and anyone with respiratory problems will have a hard time breathing."

LMAO ! ......very good.

Another way is what was done in NM when they imposed this crap in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. If your only source of heat is a wood stove, fireplace or boiler then your exempt. They used to put a big reflective tag on your chimney that smoke police would see and not cite you.

SF has a tolerable climate weather wise. Politically it is hell on earth.

hey to all you Pelosi Environuts in SF, and thanks for your part BUT the problem is I believe different. As a matter of fact just on your behalf, I’ll go grab underbrush, twigs, logs, & leaves & burn my trash as I do every week.
Perhaps, we’ll cut up some logs for our wood burning stove that we may need this winter.
I love Texas and our freedoms, please keep your blue state politics & beliefs to yourself.

I guess when you try to implement your policies nationwide that you won’t have a problem putting our of business those that sell wood burning stoves.

Smoke actually provides particles around which water droplets can form, resulting in RAIN.

When areas depended upon smoke fires for heat, they had more precipitation (RAIN).

London now doesn’t have the great fogs which were typical of the city for centuries—but neither does England have the RAIN it used to always get.

If you want RAIN, you seed the clouds.

If California wants RAIN, it shouldn’t forbid smoke.

I’ve lived in the South Bay for 25 years and the winter air quality has never been a problem. Today, far fewer people burn wood than 25 years ago. I fought this stupid rule with letters and talking to the manager of this program, but I knew we were going to lose against the nanny state. I’m 100% certain this will be ratcheted down in coming years leading to a complete ban within 10 years. But’s it’s all for the common good, so I feel great /sarc.

Some poor schmuck will get a fine for $2,000 while a few hundred acres are burning in a forest region not too far away.

My grandmother is 81 and needs oxygen at times due to her asthma. While she doesn’t allow [cigarette] smoking in her home, they build a fire everyday. This law is ridiculous.

How did your Grandmother live to be 81 and mine live to be 83? Uncles, Aunts who lived to be 90? Everybody was smoking cigarettes everywhere and they lived to tell about it. Their bodies should be donated to science fiction.

The whole liberalism thing is a joke. Plenty of room for satire. Fortunately for them, anyone conservative with wit uses it to go into advertising and makes millions while the witless teach advertising in college.

Our response here should be to gather together as many homeowners as possible, at least a thousand to start, all using their fireplaces on the same day/evening. Lets see if the fireplace jackboots can keep up with that.

The problem with your plan is these homeowners who can't have a fire were probably cheering when the law was announced.

They got what they want so boo freakin' hoo! (you must remember this is SF)

"...homeowners who can't have a fire were probably cheering when the law was announced"

The cheering will stop when the next ordinance prohibits some kind of activity these left wing pukes embrace.

Nice tagline BTW. Everyone’s 401k has become a 201k.

Libs fiddle while Rome burns. Nostrildamus Waxman calls hearings on steroids in baseball and asks pointed questions like “Who injected whose buttocks with what and when?”

Meanwhile, the financial system collapses and it’s all Bush’s fault.
