Republican Sen. John McCain made three "big" mistakes while campaigning.
Add those to the fact he had to follow in the footsteps of an unpopular president, and the Democrats were almost guaranteed a win Nov. 4, a political analyst said Friday.
"It was a very unusual election, and almost all trend lines said it would be a Democratic victory," said Jerry Mayer, associate professor at George Mason University's School of Public Policy and director of the master's of public policy program. "It was not your year, Republicans."

Or you have the third party loons who share anti war, legalize drugs, amnesty, against homeland security, 9/11 Truthers all Obama lemmings
The Washington ComPost is HARDLY the organ for choice advice to the GOP and my guess is this professor AND his University were in the forefront of Obama-proskenesis.
Lieberman couldnt even win FL for Gore and he would have won it for McCain? Sure.
I guess Joe would have prevented the 30 pt swing in the hispanic vote and the 15 pt swing in the black vote that won the state for Obama. Please.
Even if Joe did help win FL, he wouldn’t have helped at all in VA, NC, CO, NV, NM, OH or any of the other states, so McCain maybe loses with 195 EVs instead of 174, big deal.
PA? Jews make up 1% of the vote in PA and McCain lost by 11 pts. Somehow I doubt the Jewish vote was really where he messed up there.
Just more attempts to discredit Palin. They want to totally ruin any future chances. Really though, it all depends on how Obama does. If he does well, or even average, he’ll win rather comfortably in 2012 and we’ll see what happens in 2016. If he screws up like Carter or Bush41 did in their first terms, Palin or whoever the GOP nominee is will have a very good shot, just as Reagan and Clinton did when they won.
This is the only guy on the cutting edge of hindsight who gets it wrong.
if obama balances the budget without raising taxes he’ll do well but I just don’t see that happening.
The Washpost idiots can’t even spell the Dem lover’s name LOL!

The federal government has no business in the issue of drugs. Read the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (specifically the 10th Amendment).
Amnesty!? Is this is a joke? None of us here want amnesty. GWB and McCain on the other hand...
Against Homeland Security; as in we’d rather protect our borders than those of Iraq? That sure is against Homeland Security!
9/11 truthers... where have we advocated that it was all a conspiracy?
Bob Barr for amnesty, a global warmer, ACLU employee
Barr, Paul, Baldwin, etc. all 9/11 Truthers
The list goes on.
McCain leaned hard right? Who knew? Musta leaned while no one was looking but snapped back to a comfortable left, right?
The libs voted for Obama even though it was apparent that he knew nothing.
If the Republicans would have ran as anti-amnesty, fiscal conservative, social-conservative patriots, they would have won.
McCain was PRO-amnesty, robbing the GOP of a potentially election winning topic. He was a socialist, big government spender like Bush, and is lukewarm on socially conservative issues.
The RINOS told us all that we needed McCain, and now that McCain got beat by the most liberal guy in the Senate, they’re telling us that McCain was too FAR to the right. Are you ready to stop trusting them yet? There seems to be a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican party and the obvious answer is that the core principles need to return or we continue to drift towards socialism.
Puhleeez....
John McCain mistook himself for someone who the American people would vote into the Presidency.
He probably would have gotten a third of the votes that he did get, minus Sarah Palin.
John McCain is his own “mistake”.
I see you signed up 27 Nov 08 to bring typical shoot from the lip comments.
Threads set up by a school boy who probably never held a real job for two straight years in the real world is not where I would look for enlightenment.
Those into groupthink get sucked into this exercise of Displacement and Spliting by the uninformed.
As a Reagan Republican who actually worked for him in his first campaign for Gov. at his headquarters here in San Diego, have followed politics and world affairs since I was probably ten years old in the 50s.
Not to mention being in the front lines face to face against the Code Pinkos, to being part of a group countering over 50,000 Mexicans.
Not being a Pedantic professional school kid, I have
actually experienced the real world first in administrative
work to many years in the legal field with the County Attorneys.
The article the thread is based on is from the Washington. Post, that bastion of Liberalalism. It brings in a Prof.
another professional school boy who has no real world experience and who thought Kerry would beat Bush in 04
bassed on his distain for Bush.
McCain was not my first choice in the primary but Obama, a man child who has spent his life in Universities and alliance to Marxism, I did not want to see as president.
Living in a large city and one with the largest concentration of Military in the U.S. also sitting around 18 miles north from the largest and busiest border crossing in the world, you have a clue what is going on.
We have two parties, you work in the Republican party to keep as many conservatives up front and elected to office.
Between the leftwing MSM and the Liberal Public schools and Univs., Liberals are flooding the electorial system.
The all or nothing mentality will not win.
We must be conservative but also somewhat pragmatic.
Third parties brought us Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter.
Two of our worst presidents.
Third parties suck in malcontents and give lip service to conservatives to draw them.
The candidates are delusiional and hold views more in line with the left such as being anti war, legalizing drugs,
9/11 Truthers all out of the Soros playbook, some like Barr are Global Warmers, for gay marriage, and amnesty and
Keyes for reparations among them.
“Why, Johnnie, they ARE soft and smooth, just like the top of your head !”
Ah! Another Sarah Palin hit piece.
I just popped into GMU.edu to find an email address for Ass. Prof. Mayer, and what greets me on the main page?
