Indian forces storm Jewish centre

Indian security forces have begun an attack on a Jewish centre in Mumbai where an unknown number of people are being held hostage by gunmen.

TV footage showed troops abseiling from a helicopter into the centre, and soldiers on the ground closing in.

Commandos are also clearing the last gunmen from two luxury hotels, more than a day after a series of attacks that killed 119 people and injured 300.

Indian PM Manmohan Singh has vowed to track down the perpetrators.

Gunmen armed with automatic weapons and grenades targeted at least seven sites in Mumbai late on Wednesday, opening fire indiscriminately on crowds at a major railway station, the two hotels, the Jewish centre, a hospital and a cafe frequented by foreigners.

MUMBAI, India — Security forces assaulted a Jewish center in Mumbai where Muslim militants were believed holed up with possible hostages Friday, with black-clad commandos dropping from a Indian helicopter as sharpshooters opened fire on the five-story building.

The attack came as Indian commandoes scoured two luxury hotels room-by-room for survivors and holed-up militants, more than a day after a chain of attacks across India's financial center by suspected Muslim militants left at least 119 people dead.

At the headquarters of the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch, a commando assault began shortly after dawn following a tense night in which six trucks of soldiers had been brought in to surround the building.

At least 17 commandos have abseiled from a helicopter into the Jewish centre in Mumbai taken by terrorists, and explosions have been heard.

The centre was one of several targets in the city attacked by Islamic terrorists. Officials said hostages, including Israelis, were believed to be held in the building.

Witnesses said the first group of seven armed men crouched on the roof of the building as the helicopter returned to drop 10 more military personnel.

Intermittent loud explosions were heard from inside the building.

It was not immediately clear if the commandos involved in the assault were Indian or Israeli.

One doesn't need a mechanical device to rappel. It can be done with nohting more than a rope.

'Abseil' is the British term for rappel. Indians tend to use British terminology.
