Furious China calls off EU summit

China showed its fury at international recognition accorded to the Dalai Lama by calling off an annual summit with the European Union because of France's Nicolas Sarkozy plans to meet the Tibetan god-king.

The decision by Beijing, coming when the international community is striving to boost cooperation to fight off the global financial crisis, is a dramatic example of the lengths to which Beijing is willing to go to isolate the Dalai Lama internationally.

French President Sarkozy, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, will go ahead with plans to meet the exiled Buddhist monk in Poland next month despite Beijing's explicit anger. Luc Chatel, a French government spokesman, said: "The president of the Republic will meet the Nobel Prize winners. So he will meet the Dalai Lama in that framework."

European diplomats said China had been enraged by a public announcement of the meeting. One said: "It was considered a turning point." The annual summit had been due to take place next week in Lyon.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, of fostering independence for his deeply Buddhist Himalayan homeland.

Anti-Chinese riots by Tibetans in March provoked fury in Beijing as they threatened to overshadow the August Olympics by stirring international sympathy for the Tibetan cause. The Dalai Lama, winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, wants greater autonomy for Tibet, which China insists is part of its territory.

They’re our “free trade” friendly marketplace partners! I know because that is what the Bush Clinton Bush’s have told us for many years.

The CFR, the CSIS, Brookings Institute, American University, all taxpayer funded, concur.
