Every president-elect vets his incoming staff and usually that vetting begins with a lengthy questionnaire. But one question asked on Barack Obama's questionnaire is raising hackles among gun owners and fans of the Second Amendment. Question No. 59 begins: "Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun?"
The questionnaire goes on to insist that a gun-owning jobseeker "provide complete ownership and registration information," and asks: "Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage."
South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint believes the incoming administration is biased against gun owners in its hiring. "The questionnaire already seeks information about illegal activity so there is no reason to ask this question unless the Obama Administration plans to use it to discriminate based on lawful activity," he wrote in an email blasted out to supporters recently. The senator plans to follow up by introducing federal legislation making it illegal to discriminate against someone for the simple fact that they lawfully own a firearm.
Mr. Obama is skating dangerously close to reigniting the political wars over gun control. Bill Clinton blamed the gun issue for helping cost Democrats their House majority in 1994, and Al Gore supporters believe it was pivotal in his 2000 presidential defeat. Nor did Mr. Obama help himself with his famous quip about "bitter" rural voters "clinging" to God and guns. His questionnaire not only shows a certain disdain for gun owners but a typical ignorance of how gun ownership works in America. The vast majority of guns are not "registered" per se. Most long guns can be purchased by filling out a form and passing an instant background check. That creates a paper trail...

I guess that means Joe Biden will have to give up his Beretta shotgun. I’m sure Dick Cheney will give him a fair price for it, and use it well.
He'll fix that, right quick.
Yeah, I'm embarrassed to say that my old rifle destroyed a lot of cans and bottles back when I was a kid.

Indeed, by making reality match his warped unreality.
I’ve got several surplus military rifles.
I would EXPECT that one or more of mine has caused property damage, personal injuries and possibly even death.
I don’t know, but I seriously doubt this has been heavily featured on the MSM outlets. Thanks to the media cover-up during the election, Hussein was able to scam a great many into believing he is not a raving anti 2nd amendment nut and gun confiscator. I wonder if FOX will drop its Hussein worship long enough to file a report?
Once he starts instituting all his “common sense, resonable restrictions” on gun owners, he doesn’t want to appear hypocritical by having gun owners in his admin.
‘Spose he’s afraid somebody will be packin’ during a cabinet meeting?
Good. Gun owners in general need to wake up. Those lines for guns & ammo since the election are filled with those relatively few who DO follow events - but not the 90% or so for whom gun ownership is about as important as car ownership.
I welcome the political war over guns - because it'll contribute mightily to the downfall of the Dems in 2010 and Obama in 2012. Bring it on!
Background check=paper trail? How concerned must we be? I just bought one at the last gun show and will buy another this w/e.
notice they don’t care to ask if it’s ever been used to thwart a crime.
Well they won't be able to return fire, IMHO, when the revolution starts.
I guess no SecCommerce for you, Bill.
did I misunderstand or was this a bad analogy? try taking peoples cars away and see what happens.
of course, I have heard some comparisons. registration. . . competency test. . . license required. .. coming next . . “it's a privilege”
of course when someone gets in trouble with a car, and they impound the car, they don't come to your house and take all your other cars. . . but maybe that is coming too.
This is great news in the sense that the administration can never even remotely appear to be anything but anti-gun.
Are you implying that the network writers are a bunch of lying, filthy, slime ball, gun grabbing communists?
