Bush's pardon list shows no high-profile convicts

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President George W. Bush's latest list of pardons does not include some high-profile criminals who still hope the president will grant them clemency in his final weeks in office.

On Monday, Bush granted pardons to 14 individuals and commuted the prison sentences of two others whose misdeeds included dealing drugs, evading taxes, killing bald eagles or mishandling hazardous waste.

The most recent batch, however, did not include any well-known convicts like junk bond dealer Michael Milken, who is seeking a pardon on securities fraud charges, or two politicians convicted of public corruption — former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., and four-term Democratic Louisiana Gov. Edwin W. Edwards — who want Bush to shorten their prison terms.

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., noted that the list also did not include former Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean, who were convicted of shooting a drug smuggler and trying to cover it up. Ramos and Compean are each serving sentences of more than 10 years for shooting Osvaldo Aldrete Davila in the buttocks while he was fleeing from an abandoned marijuana load in 2005.

Agreed....he pardons a convicted drug dealer that was in possession of $1.25M in cocaine(who happens to sing, but leaves the border agents hanging.....

I’ve had serious issues with Bush on the economy, border control and a host of other issues. I’ve weighed that against the stellar job he has done defending the nation.

As far as I’m concerned, this would tip the scales against him......

When your new President changes the laws so drug dealers/users aren't breaking the law, then they won't face jail time - until then, it is against the law and you can't choose which laws to break.

Child molesters get sentenced for the dispicable things they have done - but saying a crooked banker or doctor or lawyer isn't deserving of a sentence is pathetic. They can ruin a life just as a violent criminal or a drug dealer/user can ruin the lives of their victims.

No, no one makes another take drugs but they are illegal because people get addicted then steal from others to feed their addictions. It wouldn't matter if they were legal or not, it wouldn't stop the addicts from doing whatever it takes to get the money to buy them.

Prisons are for lawbreakers - and white collar criminals shouldn't get off just because they aren't street thugs. They can cause millions of dollars of damage to innocent people.
