How can the Republican Party rebound? The first step would be to quit letting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham set its agenda.
A second step would be for congressional Republicans to actually try to help President-elect Barack Obama succeed in addressing the country's dire problems offering better ideas where appropriate and opposing just when necessary, not reflexively.
And the third maybe the biggest one would be for GOP governors to use their posts to show the country how conservatives can solve problems, especially the dismal state of American education and its menacing cousin, lagging American competitiveness.
If one governor would fully implement a widely circulated proposal to transform U.S. education based on having most children graduate after the 10th grade and using the savings to pay teachers like professionals it could serve as a model for the nation and bring the United States back to world standards.
But step 1 is to fire Limbaugh and his ilk as the intellectual bosses of the GOP.
In recent years, Republicans have let right-wing talk-show hosts whip the GOP base into frenzies over immigration, brain-damage victim Terri Schiavo and same-sex marriage that have branded the party as troglodyte.
The result is that the demographic groups representing the future of American politics shifted decisively to the Democratic Party in 2008 Latinos, young people, the well-educated, moderates, working women, first-time voters, suburbanites and seculars.

Sigh. So sad. Have a nice day.
Oh, Mort. Go away.
...I thought Gov. Palin was the next big thing???
...Good on yer. I listen to these republican shills so I can have something to be p-ssed off about, and now, all the turncoats that shilled for McCain, I have no sympathy for yer Grand Old Party. BooHooHoo...
Limbaugh’s audience is something on the order of 20 million, I believe. I would say that’s pretty culturally pervasive. Not all who tune in are committed idealogical conservatives, or really even know what that means. To argue that there is no value in having a podium that size to promote conservative values in a way accessible to the average voter is nonsensical. Why do you think the left is obsessed with him?
In terms of what Limbaugh promotes, he’s absolutely right about conservatism. When it’s actually on the ballot, it has a good chance to win. That’s why folks like Kondracke would like to convince the right to never put it on the ballot to begin with, and would love to see Limbaugh fade from the national scene.
You know, Mort... Nobody hired Rush Limbaugh, and nobody can fire him. If people don’t want to listen to Rush Limbaugh, nobody is holding anybody’s ear to the radio.
The day the GOP “fires” Rush is the day I quit voting for Republicans. I *love* Limbaugh. He’s smart and funny as hell.
My two twenty-something nephews aren’t interested in listening to a sort of “National Review” show. Who do they listen to? Howard Stern. Blech. One didn’t vote (we knew he wouldn’t) and the other voted for Obama because all of his friends did, apparently. @@
Conservatives don’t need to “change” to become liberals.
Nice try, Mort. :::wink:::
RUSH does get it and that is why I look forward to listening to him every day. I am not brainwashed by RUSH, nor led astray, I think almost identical to him already. He is head and shoulders more talented and more correct (98.8% of the time) than most everything else out there. Also, I should have said his talent is on loan from GAHHHHHUWD, as he does. Could it be that you harbor a little bit of envy regarding RUSH.
Obomber, on the other hand, is a fraud, a puppet, a fifth column communist traitor, a stooge, a patsy etc., who has an acceptable stage presence. He is in way over his head and he knows it. He apparently didn't register for the selective service, he can't produce a valid birth certificate and so on. All his supposed attributes amount to a charade. He is not the leader, but a figure head who reminds me of the guy who had to smoke crack in order to get in the right zone to write the West Wing, if you recall. The coverage 24/7/365 is a ruse and a diversion. The puppet masters are the problem. The vote fraud is a problem. And on, and on, and on.
The chattering nabobs of positivism don't have me fooled, the rioting in the streets has simply been nipped in the bud temporarily or has not materialized into anarchy, yet, as our enemies would want it.
I don't want to get on your case, per se, but me, myself, I'm mad as a hatter and I am sick of the B***S*** from the ruling elites who think they don't have a care in the world, while the rest of us out here in the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives have to conceal carry to survive.
First...Morton, yer an idiot...
Second...Mort, yer an idiot...
Wait for it!!!
Third...Mortonnnn, yer an idiot...
BTW, Mort who???
...don't e-mail him/his employer...It'll only encourage him....it'll feed his tiny ego.
Rush hurt himself, I think, by carrying water for so long for GWB.
Ah! So you're an educated individual who can think critically. Evidently a public school drop-out (escapee?). :)
My children are in their twenties. The boy (stepson) watches a lot of TV and plays video games ad nauseum. Daughters usually only watch movies. Daughters can think critically when pressed, the son cannot. Genetics? Media pablum? Schools? Maybe all the above, but it's scary.
The libs have done a great job dumbing down our kids. I fight it at every turn, but looking at bright & shiny things (TV) is easier than thinking.
I respectfully disagree and think he's far more dangerous than a puppet. Barry appears to believe all the messiah-hype, and probably has since childhood. We have no way to know how his mother raised him, but can speculate given her hatred for the US. The thing that bothers me most is that Barry has been indoctrinated with this hatred (even if only from Ayers and Wright) yet chose to run for POTUS.
My father called FDR the "Great American Destroyer". I think whatever FDR did to this country will pale in comparison to Barry's regime.
Remember Khrushchev's "We will bury you!" shoe-banging tantrum at the UN? We may yet see his prediction become reality.
