The day after Barack Obama was elected president, Kari Fulton heard a white colleague proclaim that racism in America is dead. She cringed, worrying it might be a sign of flagging interest in the fight against discrimination.
In reality, racism is still very much alive and well, said Fulton, who graduated last year from Howard University, a historically black college in the nations capital.
Obamas election has generated a euphoria among African Americans that is palpable. For some, the weight of history has finally been eased after generations of struggling for equality. But amid the postelection glow of racial harmony lurks a sobering fact: Racial disparities persist - in just about every measurable form - and they wont simply melt away because the nation has an African American president.
Fulton, 23, was part of a group of young African American activists from across the country who worked to register and turn out young African_American voters in the presidential election. The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation brought the group together shortly after the election to learn about converting their enthusiasm into ongoing political activism.
Election Day was just the beginning, said Fulton, who lives in Washington and works as an organizer for the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative. People dont expect President Obama to be a superhero. We have to solve our own problems.
The problems are significant.
About a quarter of African Americans live in poverty - nearly three times the rate for white people-at a time when rising budget deficits and expensive corporate bailouts are going to leave little federal money for anti-poverty_programs. The federal budget deficit is likely to hit a record $1 trillion next year.
African_American adults are less likely than white people to have college degrees and more likely to be in prison.

Whitey still owes us BIG TIME....
It’s not government’s purpose to eliminate racial disparities — that is, measurable differences between races. Everybody is different, and trying to hard to be more so.
Stupidest headline of the year.
False.
Rascism is over. That’s so 20th century.
Am I the only one who sees irony in that statement?
Everybody — regardless of skin color — has to stop having babies and expecting the taxpayers to pay for their care, feeding and healthcare.
What is that? What do "activist" do? Are there white "activist" or can only A-f-r-i-c-a-n A-m-e-r-i-c-a-n-s be "activist"?
Exactly-we’re different when that works to their advantage, and we’re all the same when it doesn’t. The game is rigged.
“Whitey still owes us BIG TIME....”
The tab for LBJ’s Great Society programs is north of 11 trillion dollars so far and growing, but just looooook at allll the progress you’ve made. s/ off.
*cough* The Bell Curve *cough*
“What is that? What do “activist” do? Are there white “activist” or can only A-f-r-i-c-a-n A-m-e-r-i-c-a-n-s be “activist”?”
RACIST!
I’m not sure the best president could stand up to those expectations under the most perfect of circumstances. Obama is inexperienced, and the change he spoke of is the return of the Clintons? He is truly not the messiah they preach of.
It wont ever be enough. You ohzs me runs way too deep.
Is that another name for “activist”?
If you go to predominantly Black schools, how the hell do you know if racism is "still very much alive and well" or not? Seems to me you sure won't have much experience with it. Except the Black racists nobody ever talks about.
Hehe, that’s what I was thinking but didn’t say it. Cheers to you for having more courage!
