On the campaign trail, Barack Obama promised to get a million plug-in hybrid cars on the road by 2015. His own new presidential limousine will be far from green, however.
The Obamobile being prepared for the president-elect is said to be a monster gas-guzzler made by General Motors, the troubled car giant. It will look like a black Cadillac but is built like a tank. A spy photographer who tracks down future car models for magazines snatched pictures of the heavily disguised first-car-in-waiting when it was being road-tested last summer.
The armour-plated car, which has a raised roof, windows up to 5in thick, extra-strength tyres and a body made of steel, aluminium, titanium and ceramics, is thought to be based on a GMC 2500 truck that gets less than 10 miles to the gallon. Three cars are believed to be in production so that two can serve as decoys.
While security is paramount - the car is built to survive roadside bombs as well as gunfire - there are hybrid four-wheel drives on the market, such as Fords Mercury Mariner, which some critics believe could have been adapted for the president.

Send him a tire gauge!
Says who? I never promised them a Rose Garden.
Um, excuse me, but what is wrong with the car that President Bush uses? Obama is too good for the old vehicle, he needs a new one at taxpayers’ expense?
I imagine “the One” has already received special permission to use a gas guzzler from the U.N. They love him.
This guy gets it (though he thinks the problem is a good thing), and it is very sad that many on our side do not - concentrated leadership power, whether at the global or federal level - is the greatest of all risks to freedom. Concentrating power at the highest executive levels of government is a crime against a people if done nationally, and a crime against human civilization if global in scope even if those responsible for the concentrating are not those who abuse the power. Under an efficient central government, totalitarianism can take root in hours - over any arbitrary domain of control. Eternal benevolence is a poor assumption for the extension of central government power. The greater the scale, the greater the threat.
probably can’t do the Detroit Lean in the old units, and retrofitting speakers would probably require extensive reworks. Btter to spend more money for new than to retrofit existing.
Not enough bling.
Change. No more Bush.
Tyres? Real Americans put tires on their cars.
Don’t complain comrade — the body must sacrifice for the head!
Wouldn’t bother me if he drove a Stryker or an Abrams tank.
yeah but Americans elected a tyro
Perhaps we should demand that, to show us how to lead the way for economy cars, that he be chauffered around in a Yugo.
Sort of hard to have an armored Prius, isn’t it? Some green changes just aren’t practical.
Come on guys...he gotta be a balla.
Remember when the communist leaders all used to have nicer stuff than the peasants were allowed to have?
DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO! POMPUS A##WIPES
