NY lawmaker seeks to prevent Bush pardons of “cronies”

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York and chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, has authored a resolution demanding that President Bush refrain from issuing “pre-emptive pardons of senior officials in his administration during the final 90 days of office.”

The resolution, Nadler says, is in response to Bush’s “widespread abuses of power and potentially criminal transgressions against our Constitution.”

The goal, he says, is to prevent “undeserved pardons of officials who may have been co-conspirators in the president’s unconstitutional policies, such as torture, illegal surveillance and curtailing of due process for defendants.”

“This resolution declares that we will not tolerate a last minute attempt by President Bush to shelter his cronies - cronies who may well be guilty of serious criminal offenses - from the full force of the law,” says Nadler

How can you be pardoned for a crime you were never charged with?

Here is the way President Ford phrased it: 'Now, therefore, I, Gerald R. Ford, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from July (January) 20, 1969, through August 9, 1974'

This 'deal; was never rescinded.

No need to use the actual word when everyone here knows what you mean, but the weak-minded thought police who scan this site looking for “hate speech” will be fooled.

This exactly why Bush should issue such pardons.

Jerry Nadler could have made Golda Meir anti-Semitic.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and seventy-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and ninety-ninth.

The pardon power is the Presidents alone. Whether it’s a democrat or a republican it doesn’t matter and Nadler can’t do squat about it.

I don't have a huge problem with that. If laws were broken, punish the lawbreakers.

So the scumbag rats can go full speed ahead with political witch hunts and show trials?
Get a grip.

“Shark eat Shark” is a great description of the kind of politics necessary to counter the left. At the moment, it’s more like “Shark eat Dolphin”, and we’re the dolphins.

I said if laws were broken. I don’t believe they were. No president or other official should be above the law.

I said if laws were broken.

And how, exactly, is that determined if there are not hundreds of dragged-out political witch hunts to, you know, find out "if laws were broken"?

It is the job of LEO to enforce the laws. Obviously this can be done in such a way as to be unfair, and any Obama investigation/prosecution of Bush personnel would probably be exactly that. Especially since what the left wingnuts consider crimes are primarily policy disagreements.

However, your position seems to be that Bush staffers should NOT be punished if they broke the law. This is not a tenable position. In theory, at least, government officials are not above the law.

I seriously doubt that Obama or any other president is really going to pursue such investigations. It is far too obvious that he could be setting himself up for the same in 4 or 8 years. Kings generally object on principle to attacks on kings.

You might be a capitalist and a patriot, but you have absolutely no sense of humor.

Take a cold shower, you need it.

Two friends standing here right now say that you need a sense of humor. I can understand your not enjoying my humor... I find Chris Rock and a few others unfunny... but millions love them. I do not understand how your thinking I am not funny made me a commie however.
