A cache of private letters attained by The Sunday Times reveals the influences that helped shape the young Obama
Ann Dunham's time in Indonesia was spent as a programme officer for women's work
In his autobiographical memoir, Barack Obamas mother is almost as distant a figure as his absent Kenyan father: Americas president-elect was largely brought up by his grandparents in Hawaii. But a trove of private letters obtained by The Sunday Times highlights her devotion to her son and her struggle to make ends meet as an anthropologist in Indonesia.
It was as a free-spirited student in Hawaii that Ann Dunham fell pregnant and married Obamas father at 18, at a time when interracial unions were still illegal in many parts of America. They divorced when Obama was two and she later married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian. It was the start of a long love affair with his country, although the marriage did not last.
Dunham died at 52 of ovarian cancer in 1995, leaving behind a 1,000-page doctoral thesis on peasant blacksmithing in Indonesia, which friends still hope will gain her academic recognition. They believe her support for micro-financing projects and womens work in Indonesia influenced Obamas determination to build a grassroots campaign for president - and may yet shape his economic agenda in office.
Alice Dewey, a professor of anthropology at the University of Hawaii, was Dunhams close friend and thesis supervisor. For her, Obama will always be Barry, as his mother called him. Dunham also had a daughter from her second marriage, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who is now a teacher in Hawaii.
I have a vivid picture of Ann on a couch, Maya going and sitting on her lap and Barry, not wanting to be left out, sitting on Mayas lap -

Yes, I agree. Lots of things are disappearing. It’s starting already.
It’s been going on for a long time and will continue! Got to have an enigma don’t you know?
Capitalism is evil. Not much has changed in Barry's mind since he lived in New York.
Here's the start of a Zen joke -- A priest, a vicar, a rabbi, a Buddhist monk, and Richard Dawkins all slipped and fell naked on a potato that a vegetarian had brought over for lunch. Who voted for Obama?
Well, that raises interesting questions, too, then. If she lied about the birth places of both her kids, and lied about marrying Obama senior, she might well have lied about having a PhD in order to get the kind of job she wanted.
I'm not saying that she did, and it wouldn't matter all that much anyway, but frankly at this point I wouldn't put anything past these people.
Needless to say this is sheer speculation, and probably not true. But it would be nice if the press would do their jobs for a change and actually check the facts before passing all these stories around.
And this COD is claimed by whom?

Here is a link to the story from “The Honolulu Advertiser”

They all voted for Obama except the priest?
Here's an excerpt:
Her thesis adviser, Alice Dewey... "If we have Barry as president and he works that hard, we're fine."
Nearly all of the family and close friends know him as "Barry." I've long-time had a suspicion that "Barry Soetoro" is on Obama's vault COLB, which instead may be a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth (weaker prima facia evidence of birth facts in court). If so, that too would be an eligibility problem if no legal name change has taken place.
The Supreme Court has GOT to get their hands on the COLB, either via the Berg or Donofrio case!
“And this COD is claimed by whom?”
I don’t have any idea what you are asking.
No one can even prove Hussein is a citizen.

I think everyone agrees that his mother died from ovarian cancer. It was in 1995, before he was elected to the senate. As for citizenship, maybe no one can prove it to your satisfaction, but it appears that the burden of proof has been met for most people. I can’t imagine that Rush and Hannity wouldn’t take this story and run with it, if there was any possibility that Obama’s citizenship was in question. This issue is being ignored by everyone, and it isn’t for lack of information. They just won’t touch the story.
I am happy to read your take on the virtue of Stanley Ann Dunham. Nobody really knows what the inner life of this idealistic young woman, was. I have a relative who had a Cesarean operation and cancer of the ovary was discovered. She says it saved her life. I may be an old softie, but I somehow could not judge such a young woman, as Ann Dunham,. Imagine the idealistic crap that was fed into her young mind? Young women at that age are vulnerable - or were.
Excuse the ramble. I have a lead though on the citizenship question. Been into family history research for 25 years myself- this is why I am really into Obama's birth- what a challenge! Billy Cunningham who came in when Drudge quit, did but lightly touch on the subject,on a Sunday night.
For those who listen to George Noury on Coast to Coast, they may remember he had on Dr Jerome Corsi a couple of times. He had on Phillip Berg the lawyer to give his appraisal of Barack Obama, the President-elect's puzzling reticence on his paper work. George was very polite, just saying "weird, very weird".
I am about to call it a day and maybe listen at 1am to Coast to Coast and doze off. (laughs)

You can find the death of Stanley A. Dunham in the SSDI, so I think it is pretty clear that she actually died in 1995. I don’t know what your point is. Do you believe she is still alive, that she died of something else, or that she never existed at all?

At least that explains how he afforded Columbia. Though I must say she did have about 19 years to finish her education before he attended, no? I guess she loved being a student.
“Fell pregnant” in the first couple weeks of class with the tall dark and handsome exchange student. Maybe “fell” into each other’s arms after the first Russian lab?
