HONG KONG—Authorities in the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu have imposed a curfew on some districts of Longnan city following two days of violence between security forces and local residents resisting eviction.

"The whole area is under curfew," a local official who declined to be identified said. "Any groups of more than three people will be beaten without mercy."

He said government propaganda cars were moving through the city following rioting Tuesday, warning local residents not to leave their homes, to be careful what they say, and not to gather in groups of more than three, on pain of strict enforcement.

"They were beating everyone they saw out on the streets [Tuesday]," he said. "They were saying in my department today that the police are attacking people. It's horrible. Things have got really serious."

The largest riot in recent years broke out in Longnan City, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province, over a government-backed eviction project and unsatisfactory compensation to residents.

Sources say that in recent months, news about the Longnan City government moving its municipality’s administrative center from the Wudu District to Cheng County triggered worries and discontent among residents in the Wudu District. Those who are especially concerned include farmers whose land will be seized by the government but who have not been relocated or given compensation and residents who will be forcefully evicted from their homes, as well as land developers.

Tens of thousands of residents made two attempts to attack the Communist Party Office in Longnan City, from late on Nov. 18 until early the next day. The crowd eventually grew to 50,000 people

Not to make light of these atrocities by Chinese authorities, but could we work out some sort of exchange deal and get a few of their cops over here for Code Pink protests in Berkeley, Arlington Cemetery funeral demonstrators, and gays assaulting Christians and old ladies in San Francisco?

This is how recall elections are held in a one party state.

Bad news for the Chinese Government. I KNOW it is impossible to practice Communism and Capitalism in the same country.

Once people get a taste of freedom, it is hard to keep down.

Then, after 250 years or so, they will take it for granted.

YIKES!
So, what’s Really, Really, behind it?

Something does not quite compute for me based on what I can gather from this limited explanation. Gotta be something more than just worries about earthquakes by the officials and people wanting to stay in their homes and on their farms.

no compensation for appropriating your farmland and the prospect of forced eviction are powerful motivators.

Hmmm. Obama's paradise

Civilian Security Forces, truth squads, thugs with night sticks (at polling places). What was it Obama said about how the Chinese did things so well?

Thanks... That is indeed a good reason to riot

But WHY are they taking them? For a big collective, state run farm, or is there something even more nefarious going on?

“I have heard rumblings about that province for some time.”

This is about as far from the leadership in Beijing as it gets. Northwest China along the Mongolian border.

And, this area was hit by a major 8.6 earthquake in May.

This, and other articles don’t go much in to the causes for this, but there have been MANY protests that have been violently put down here here recently, from Taxi drivers complaining about fuel price increases to the Tibetan riots in March.

From WIKI:
“Demonstrators marched through the streets of Xiahe, a predominantly Tibetan county in Gansu which surrounds the Labrang Monastery, a region referred to by its traditional name, Amdo Golog, by Tibetans.[23] Up to 5,000 demonstrators were reportedly involved in the Gansu riots.

There were reports of government offices being damaged by the rioters, and police using tear gas and force to break up the demonstrations.[22] The Tibetan government-in-exile claims that 19 Tibetan rioters were shot dead on March 18, little known about the Chinese or Hui deaths.[24] China’s Xinhua News Agency reported the cost of damage in Gansu at an estimated ¥230 million (US$32.7 million”

China is desperate to keep this this and the Muslem rioting/violence in Western China out of the Western Papers, it seems.
