In a letter addressed to "Dear Community," a high-powered coalition of gay-rights leaders is calling for an end to the scapegoating of African Americans for the passage of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in California. Nine painful, anger-filled and vitriolic days passed before this request for calm appeared, and although the letter is sensible and encouraging, words alone will not undo the damage.
Since an election-day exit poll found that 70% of black voters supported Proposition 8, tensions between gays and blacks have exploded on the airwaves, in newspaper columns and on the Internet. The letter, however, notes that blacks make up a small part of the 52% of California voters who supported Proposition 8. Furthermore, it says, a recent analysis of that exit poll determined that it was too small to "draw any conclusions on the African American vote."
Many in the gay community believed, perhaps naively, that shared minority status would create a sense of sympathy between the two groups, and that casting gay marriage as a benchmark in civil rights history would cement that bond. Yet some African Americans were more offended than impressed by the comparison of the right of homosexuals to marry and the right of blacks to vote or to share public accommodations. Then there is the irony of one civil rights dream fulfilled the same night another was deferred. Much has been made of the possibility that a surge in support for Barack Obama helped pass Proposition 8, but according to political analyst Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com, exit polls show that first-time voters, 83% of whom cast ballots for Obama, voted against the measure by 62% to 38%.

The black community appears less tolerant than the white community as it regards the “gay” attempt to hijack the civil rights crown. Perhaps they should try a holocaust approach instead.
One liberal group of “victims” with a 400 year chip on their shoulders versus another liberal group of “victims” with a 300,000 year chip on their shoulders—both currently scapegoating straight white men for their own poor choices in a country that now offers all the God given bounty of freedom and opportunity.

Equating a natural birth condition with a choice.
The statistics are always suspect, but from what I’ve seen there are actually more gay blacks per thousand than whites.
That would seem to make some sense if, as seems likely, one of the reasons that a male child grows up gay is the absence of a father or a male role model in the home. That isn’t much talked about these days, because it’s politically incorrect. People are BORN gay, or CHOOSE to be gay. And homosexuality is no longer thought of as a mental disorder. Yet it probably is, at least in part.
The thing is, probably, that black gays take less PRIDE in it than whites, for cultural reasons. It’s not something that their community approves to the extent that white liberals have convinced themselves to approve it.
I am losing track of the blame, I thought it was the California Mormons’ fault and now it’s the California blacks? Hell hath no fury like a homosexual scorned. Blacks, Mormons, everybody duck!
Can we end the anger and hatred of the religious community also, or is that hatred and animosity still ok?
The political fools always talk about “healing”.
I heard a story from a Korean-speaking veteran who was hired to translate talks with the Korean community after the Rodney King riots, when their neighborhood had been trashed by black rioters.
The Koreans had no sense of humor about this crap, so they hired a plane full of heavily tattooed Korean martial arts killers to fly in from Seoul, to hunt down and kill blacks who had attacked them and burned and looted their stores.
As ordered, the killers had gone hunting in the black neighborhood, and severely injured and killed dozens of black men. This had been hushed up by the LAPD, but it was getting hard to keep a lid on it.
When the translator arrived, the police told him that no matter what was actually said between the Korean leaders and the city fathers, he would “translate” to the Koreans a message from the police, that they could continue with their revenge, but to be more discreet with it, or they would be punished by the police.
To city fathers he was told to “translate”, that “We in the Korean community understand the need for healing to occur, and are hoping for better relations with the black community in the future.”
The foolish city officials didn’t have a clue about anything other than their own “My Little Pony” fantasies. To this day, no doubt, they are convinced that their jawboning was what made the difference.
Fascinating. I remember those troubles (and also the attacks on Korean grocers in NYC), but I hadn’t heard that angle before. I suppose for precisely the reason you suggest.

Psychiatrists listed homosexuality as a mental illness until the leftish backlash against the “Stonewall Incident” forced them,without any empiracal evidence in support,to delist it.
Perhaps the first time in modern America (it was already common in communist countries),but definately not the last,that politics trumped science.
Healing the gay/black divide will probably be about as easy as healing the gay/Muslim divide. It’s been my experience that blacks and Muslims both often fit the homo-supplied definition of homophobia, in that black or Muslim hatred (and fear) of f*gg*try seems almost irrational.
This entire issue is a case and point on why Conservatives have dropped the ball. Liberals and their media allies would rather that we didn’t discuss gay marriage and abortion and other so-called social conservative issues, because the mainsteam and opinion is always the conservative platform. The only time McCain ever led Obama was immediately after his answer on abortion at the Saddleback debate. Sure, voters liked Palin, but you elect a president, and that’s the only time McCain differentiated himself in that area. George Bush won, in large part over gay marriage, and McCain could have done the same if he had any stones.
Just the natural outcome of identity politics. When there is only so much to go around, various groups will do everything they can to protect their share of the spoils.
