The only thing scarier than the Christian Right are pundits who believe that they cost the GOP the election.
Without anything constructive to do, Republicans have apparently decided that being destructive might not be the wisest course of action but is a far sight better than sitting around and twiddling their thumbs. And that brings us to Kathleen Parker, conservative columnist with the Washington Post Writers Group and, lately, the bane of the GOP base.
Parker, who became the model for thousands of conservative voodoo dolls when she wrote a few weeks ago that Sarah Palin should resign from the GOP ticket, enjoyed the response she got to that suggestion so much that she decided to take her fight with the base several levels of magnitude higher by offering her opinion that conservative evangelicals are scary beasts who so frightened the electorate that they ran screaming into the polling booth and punched the card for the Democrats.
So God lost the election for the Republicans? I mean, I know the old fellow has a soft spot in his heart for children, dogs, and totally clueless liberals, but really now. Parker is saying that belief in G-O-D is scary Oogedy Boogedy and that such belief is an affliction, or disease....

Actually, those weakening the party are dumbasses like Parker that call themselves "intelligentsia".
Parker was a trojan horse all along, waiting for the opportune time to try undoing the conservative movement. The delete button was made specifically for her sort of columnist.
I never heard of Kathleen Parker before she attacked Sarah Palin.
Who decided to annoint her as the “bane” of the conservative base? “Bane” would be a promotion to some position of attention-getting for this bitter babe.
“armband religion” ? Ooogley Googley”?
WTH is that?
At best she’s become the MoDow (Maureen Dowd) of the NRO columnist crowd.
parker must be a lesbo-abortion activist... she is no CONSERVATIVE!
LLS
So, God AND Sarah Palin lost the election for John McCain. Quite a combination.
Question: What if the GOP intelligensia aren’t?
Actually, those weakening the party are dumbasses like Parker that call themselves “intelligentsia”.
*******************************************
Exactly.
One cannot really be considered a conservative unless one believes that human life, from conception to natural death, is a fundamental and nonnegotiable right.
Parker is just another hack trying to sell a column. Please don’t turn her into any more than that. She’ll go away soon enough unless we hold on to this.
great points. Just another nobody wanting to be somebody—using the star power of Sarah Palin to try to help that along and of course now that a few seem to know her name her goes the firecrackers just so we will remember her. Sounds like what this brat needs is both intelligence and religion :-). Usually ‘intelligensia’ is code word for liberal Marxists often living in capitalist or socialist countries with a decent to high income or just a bunch of blowhards living in New York. How fitting.
Parker did good work during Clinton’s BBW Tour by letting the air out of all the gasbags defending him (including Rahm ‘Three-Finger’ Emanuel).
She’s lost her way since then and has unfortunately come to epitomize the country club set.
Yes. No scratching the flea bite. It will only inflame.
What Ms. Parker, whom I used to admire, overlooks is that the GOP means nothing to conservative evangelical Christians.
If it won’t serve our purposes, we have no reason to vote for it. So she can choose, a GOP with the conservative base, or one that doesn’t have it. Which, do you think will win more elections?
What she CANNOT have is a GOP that installs Democratic policies and has the votes of conservatives. At least, not this conservative.
Anyone who thinks religion had more than one-twentieth of the effect on this election than economics did is smoking crack.
How moronic are these people? Sure get rid of the base, that'll help. Sheesh.
One thing that is undebatable in the end is fiscal conservatives need to be just that fiscally conservative. Just because the politicians are greedy and completely self promoting to a fault--lacking fiscal integrity--does not mean God has to disappear from the Republican party. In fact we all need God more than ever--including the party. How we go about putting that forward in our platforms will be decided and maybe fluctuate. But one thing is for sure the left is for every evil platform that is about killing and kicking God out. Just like this ignoramus columnist.
I think what this sort of intelligensia will find is that conservatives want more conservative Republican candidates. In fact 69% want the party more conservative (which is no brainer as right now it is basically the left lite.). God is no arm band here. It is core and helps to form many of our values--including fiscal conservatism and less government in our lives. Sarah is a walking, talking, attractive believer that practices Godly beliefs in her everyday life. This scares the Godless and the ones leaving God out more and more everyday.
We may be confronted with sort of issue going forward so we all need to know where we stand and stand up for it. My sense is the God and religion issue will be asked again (most likely in a much nicer presentation than this creep), but the left is trying to make a big move and is planting this in the ears of many that associate with them often and want power. Just like every political party that just had huge losses it is natural to look at the values and core of that party and figure out what is most important and essential going forward.
God to me in integral to the party whether He is foundational or outright in someone's face on an issue such as Prop 8. If they world is becoming more Godless it is because we need to work harder at the PR end and sell out ideas. If we let the left define us God eventually will be dead to our country and to our party.
“oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party”
AKA the evil NASCAR Republicans — Boogity Boogity Boogity!
