State lawmakers began moving toward a deal this week to close California's deficit with the help of steeper car fees that would cost many drivers hundreds of dollars annually, according to people involved in budget talks.
Under the plan, GOP lawmakers -- most of whom have signed anti-tax pledges -- would vote to triple the vehicle license fee that owners pay when they register their cars every year in exchange for a ballot measure that would impose rigid limits on future state spending. Motorists' annual license fees would rise from 0.65% of the value of their vehicles to 2%. For a car or truck valued at $25,000, the increase would be $336.
The higher fees would generate $6 billion annually, helping to fill a budget gap that is projected to reach nearly $28 billion over the next year and a half.
The proposal is being championed by incoming state Senate leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento). Democrats and advocates for the poor have opposed strict state spending limits, saying they would cripple government services.
Steinberg may be gambling that voters would reject the limits, as they have in the past.

Sad thing is, the fat-cat liberals will exit the state and invade places like Arizona and Colorado and infect those places with their failed policies.
The arrogant ignorance of the liberal college grad is like a plague.
Doesn’t matter what they sign. They are going to ge the money they need from the sheeple one way or another, rather than the one way they should, by cutting spending.
So big freaking deal, no tax increase. They know they can’t increase it enough anyways, because all the “poor” wouldn’t have to pay it. This way, any “poor” that drives will, along with the richer- several times over- depending on how many cars they own.
"More taxes? Spending? Here? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!"

“Let me get this. Right now my tags for Dec. is 304.00. My truck is worth 13,000. So 2% is 260.00. My propose new fee would be 564.00? Is this right?”
It would so appear. So the only folks that will get no increase are the illegals that drive unlicensed/unregistered anyway.
The good news is that you’ll soon be able to purchase practically worthless vehicles from a bankrupt Chrysler, which will make your tax bill much more acceptable.
I would say that California has a serious spending problem. Raising taxes isn’t a cure, and will only serve to enable more spending.
So, as your vehicle gets older, the tax decreases. Incentive to NOT buy a new car.
It would be funny if everyone decided to not drive to work on a particular day and all take “public transportation” instead. You’d have thousands of people waiting for a train or bus for hours. Tell them you were thinking of getting rid of your car and decided to take a bus to work to see how it would work out. (Of course, then the wackos would decide there is a huge demand for “public transportation” and would try to build a more massive system.)
Why would ANYONE buy a new car in that state?
This is the reason that Gray Davis was recalled from office.
