Yep. Many Americans aren’t aware that the U.S. Navy was actually formed to combat North African (Moroccan and Algerian) piracy in the Med. when other countries, including France (go figure) felt it was easier to just pay ransoms to allow free passage of their ships. Most assume the U.S. navy was formed to combat the French or the British. This, of course, came later. There is an excellent book entitled “Six Frigates” which provides an excellent read on this historic beginning. Meanwhile we appear to have history repeating itself.
