A Democrat is poised to take the reins of power in Washington, D.C., and Fresno resident Jim Robinson is feeling a sense of deja vu.
It was President Bill Clinton's 1992 election that sparked Robinson's political activism, driving him to create a Web site that made him a grass-roots leader among conservatives before Clinton's term was over.
This year, as Barack Obama prepares to sweep into office on another tide of Democratic votes, Robinson and denizens of that Web site, freerepublic.com, are preparing to do battle again.
"We'll double and redouble our efforts to fight for what is right," Robinson says. "We've got people just spitting nails."
Free Republic, founded by Robinson in September 1996, doesn't attract much attention from the national press and is not well-known among political experts. Many of its postings have a decidedly fringe feel.
But long before Red State, Daily Kos and Little Green Footballs arrived on the Internet political scene, Free Republic was building an audience -- and becoming a formidable political force among conservatives and libertarians that is admired even by some who disagree with its political philosophy.
In a study last month by the Internet ratings firm comScore, Free Republic ranked fifth among political blogs, just behind heavyweights The Huffington Post, Politico, Drudge Report and RealClearPolitics.

uh-huh. riiiiight. If they weren't lurking FR, half these "experts" and pundits wouldn't have an original thought in their heads, much less a decent soundbite. FR darn-well has both press and poltico attention. They just don't admit it. Otherwise, they'd have to report on what was being said and have JimRob and Kristinn on CNN every night.
Good job!
I know that Kiran Chetry of CNN (and originally from FNC) keeps up with Free Republic and even corrects some stories with material that’s posted here.
To be specific, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a helicopter “crashed” during rescue operations. It was orange-colored and Geraldo immediately said histerically that it was a Coast Guard helicopter. I noticed that the type of helicopter was wrong for a CG helo, and that it had civilian markings, and that it had rolled over, not crashed and I posted that here.
Kiran soon repeated those words during the morning F&F.
Hats off to Jim!!!! Thank you for your dedication. You are in my prayers daily.
If so then how come I regularly see it mentioned in the news and on the cable pundit shows?
That would be me. I still have 200 or so of them. Great memories! Registered did the original art.
BUMP
I guess John Ellis forgot to 'report' that Danielle Allen was using her tax exempt facilities to do Barack Obama's dirty work.
Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post just took the word of open Obama supporter Danielle Allen as gospel, assuming that her "research" was indisputable.
Allen donated $2,700 to the Obama campaign.
Kudos to our conservative leader!
Congratulations, Jim!
Congratulation Jim! Congratulations, 98% of posting Freepers.
Obviously, this clown John Ellis never heard of DU, or KOS, or the dozens of 50-member democratic sites...
Yes, I noticed that while the DailyKos, et al., put concepts up, they never put enough info to show their cards on actual activism. I guess, though, considering the level of illegal activity, such as vote fraud, they couldn't very well incriminate themselves. That's why the good guys are always at such a disadvantage.
BTW, I am the only nail-spitter who worries if the FR server is ever down, thinking, "oh, no, they've finally gone and done it - free speech has been taken away..."
Oy. You got that right!
Is Fresno a Conservative area? What areas of CA would FReepers suggest to move to if one had to move to CA?
Thank you to you both then. I thought that they were brilliant.
LOL
What, no Dan Rather fake but accurate memo exposed by Buckhead mention?!
This miscasts what has gone on here on FR throughout the Bush terms.
We spoke out against Kerry, Rather and others in 2004. We spoke out against the nominations we didn't like, we spoke out against the Pelosi congress. We spoke out in the primaries.
