A Democrat is poised to take the reins of power in Washington, D.C., and Fresno resident Jim Robinson is feeling a sense of deja vu.
It was President Bill Clinton's 1992 election that sparked Robinson's political activism, driving him to create a Web site that made him a grass-roots leader among conservatives before Clinton's term was over.
This year, as Barack Obama prepares to sweep into office on another tide of Democratic votes, Robinson and denizens of that Web site, freerepublic.com, are preparing to do battle again.
"We'll double and redouble our efforts to fight for what is right," Robinson says. "We've got people just spitting nails."
Free Republic, founded by Robinson in September 1996, doesn't attract much attention from the national press and is not well-known among political experts. Many of its postings have a decidedly fringe feel.
But long before Red State, Daily Kos and Little Green Footballs arrived on the Internet political scene, Free Republic was building an audience -- and becoming a formidable political force among conservatives and libertarians that is admired even by some who disagree with its political philosophy.
In a study last month by the Internet ratings firm comScore, Free Republic ranked fifth among political blogs, just behind heavyweights The Huffington Post, Politico, Drudge Report and RealClearPolitics.

We are here and the battle is going to be a hard fought one.
Thanks for the Site Jim. We need it.
Wanna Bet?
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
They all watch this site. They are fools if they don't.
'Preciate it!
Did you catch Rush today? He was complaining about the Weather Channel too.
I think he said they’re giving up their big global warming alarmist campaign. That’s great news. I think some people are trying to back out of their extremist, socialist-manipulated positions on that.
Well, there is record cold right now. Maybe the Weather Channel is being urged to get bk to meteorology vs. ideology. They don’t show enough local weather and the local crawler doesn’t cut it.
Same here Jim.
Right!
My pleasure! :)
"We must hang together, gentlemen...else, we shall most assuredly hang separately."
“I am biased toward FR for sure, but I see bogus data expunged on a regular basis here, and reveled in over there.”
Abso(cussing)lutely.
Remember that story that was going around about Hanoi Jane meeting with POWs, getting a note from one, and turning it over to her Commie hosts?
As soon as it was debunked—just about the very second—conservatives stopped repeating it.
Mediocre intellects like to assert that any ideologue is as bad as any other, left or right. They completely fail to understand that a central element of conservative ideology is a relentless, daily search for the truth, even if it means that we have to admit that we’ve been wrong.
If we were gathered together in person, I’d ask for a show of hands: How many of us can echo Benjamin Franklin: “...for having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information or fuller consideration to change opinions even on important subjects which I once thought right but found to be otherwise...”
Most conservatives, I think, have had this experience, painful and embarrassing as it might be.
Conversely, one of the core elements of leftism, inspired as it is by the father of lies, is self-censorship. Leftists are their own jailers (see Bloom, “The Closing of the American Mind”). They are trained to slam their ears and minds shut at the first hint of opposition to their ideology.
Conservatives understand thaat they must fairly and fully consider all matters that seem to undermine their positions, because only thus can the truth be found.
Yet “moderates” draw a moral equivalence between these two approaches to the life of the mind, and preen themselves for their “balance.”
This shows, IMO, that “moderates” are as much the enemies of truth and freedom as leftists.
