AK-Senate: Begich Widens Lead Democrat Mark Begich has nearly doubled his lead over Republican Sen. Ted Stevens with just 8,000 votes remaining to be counted in the Alaska Senate race, according to tabulations provided by the state's Division of Elections.
With 16,000 of the 24,000 remaining ballots counted, according to the Anchorage Daily News, Begich now has 146,286 votes (47.56 percent) while Stevens has 143,912 votes (46.79 percent).
Under Alaska law, a recount would be mandated only if the final margin is less than .5 percent ; Begich's lead is currently .77 percent. (Hat tip: Fellow numbers geek and Post congressional reporter Paul Kane). If the margin remains over .5 percent, Stevens could still ask for a recount but would have to pay for the costly procedure from his own campaign cash.
Begich trailed Stevens by nearly 3,200 votes on election night but roughly 90,000 votes -- a combination of absentee, early and questioned ballots -- remained uncounted and, as the counting began last week, Begich quickly closed the gap and jumped into the lead.
Should Begich win, it would bring Democratic gains to seven seats in the 2008 election, putting them at 58 seats with two races -- in Minnesota and Georgia -- still up for grabs.

Maybe I missed something. I heard the press ask Palin about Stevens several times, hoping to be able to say that she supported a corrupt criminal. Basically she replied with what amounted to “no comment,” refusing to say one way or the other.
What else could she say?
Looks like Begich was able to rally up alot of ACORN votes to slip under the table.

They would do better to change over to Democrats, I doubt anybody would complain.

A regular guest on CoastToCoastAM Nick Begich [the son that is, after all it is CoastToCoastAM, :)] has descrbed some unusual things about the search for survivors.
"The Washington-based newspaper, Roll Call, which reports on Capitol Hill, found information through the Freedom of Information Act that two FBI telexes had come in from the FBI office in Los Angeles, indicating that someone had contacted the FBI and that they had knowledge of the whereabouts of the plane and that two people were still living at the site and they gave the coordinates. This was followed up by another telex two days later in which the FBI said that they had verified the authenticity of the source and established their credibility. The source was working in surveillance technologies for an undisclosed firm and they had located the plane. . . conspiracy theorists have reported that Boggs wasn't happy with the [Warren] commission's findings and was pushing for the investigation to be reopened at the time of his death. However, according to his [Boggs] daughter Cokie Roberts, the nationally known television journalist, she told listeners to a talk radio show in April 2004 that her father had no problems with the commission's finding . . . ."
Maybe not the most crooked election in American history, but close to it.
Pretty soon time to move on to the other box.

I just heard this second on Bob Grant that Stevens lost.
Republicans remain in the fetal position, maybe it would have been different if Nixon called out Kennedy in 1960. RINO’S LET democrats steal elections, why? that remains an unanswered question with much speculation.
Am I figuring this right?
If Franken, Martin and Begich win the RATS will have their magic 60?
If Stevens were to resign before a winner is declared, would Palin get to appoint a replacement?
I think the only hope for the U.S. is a miltary coup. If that isn’t in the offing, then a revolution is likely on the horizon, in which case God watch over us all.
Martin won’t win — the turnout is already much lower in early voting and that favors Chambliss.
Begich already won.
Franken/Coleman is probably 50-50 right now. A lead of 200+ votes before a hand recount of millions is nothing.
So, it’s either 58 or 59, not 60.
Palin could not appoint a replacement for Stevens even if he had won then resigned or was booted out. By law there would have to be a special election (which the Republicans would have won easily). However, the issue is moot. Stevens already lost.

Because at its core, the GOP is still a bunch of old, white, good ol’ boys. They still believe this is the 1950s, and that what people really want is civil, statesmanlike losers. They still honestly believe that all you need to win elections is the tax message, and to look the most presidential.
The 1950s GOP of today still thinks the public will frown upon things like recounts, and that by asking for one the public will have rage and backlash against the party calling for it. They still think that being a fighter makes you look less statesmenlike, and that the voters just want a leader who’ll help unite the country and help everybody get along. They still believe that appearing to take-on Social Conservatives and GOP-leaning Libertarian groups is the way to appear independent and appeal to the Moderates and thus win their votes.
They honestly believe that in 2008, what voters really want is grown-ups who’ll martyr themselves to avoid conflict and dragging the nation through recounts and challenges to the Democrat tactics to steal elections. They really, truly believe they will be rewarded for bowing-out gracefully and without a fight.
The 1950s GOP of today does not know how to fight, and is not interested. They tread lightly at every step, even as the Democrats nuke them with ICBMs. They are so, so, so, soooooo worried about looking unstatesmanlike that it makes many of their campaigns outright impotent. They do not understand that today - in 2008 - even THEIR side want to fight to the death. They have not caught-on to the fact that the GOP base wants fighters, wants risks, and wants recounts - and does not just want gracious losers.
They are still stuck in the 1950s, and led by the National Review/New York Republican crowd who think that every election is lost because the GOP didn’t nominate someone who can give the public a proper intellectual lecture on Supply-Side Economics. They’d nominate William F. Buckley and honestly believe he’d win in a landslide - then just be BAFFLED when he lost 40 states.
They are still the arty of the 1950s - that’s why they let democrats cheat.

What a horrible thing for a family to go through. You hate to see families have to go through death under normal situations, but to never know exactly what happened must be horrible and frustrating. Prayers to the family that they continue to heal.
