Sen. Joe Lieberman will keep his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee despite hard feelings over his support for GOP nominee John McCain during the presidential campaign.
The Connecticut independent will lose a panel post on the Environment and Public Works panel as punishment for criticizing Obama this fall.
Lieberman's colleagues in the Democratic caucus voted 42-13 Tuesday to approve a resolution condemning statements made by Lieberman during the campaign but allowing him to keep the Homeland Security Committee gavel.
Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he had been very angry by Lieberman's actions but that "we're looking forward, we're not looking back."
Added Reid: "This was not a time for retribution, it was a time for moving forward on the problems of this country."
Lieberman's grasp on his chairmanship had gotten stronger since President-elect Barack Obama signaled to Democratic leaders that he's not interested in punishing Lieberman for boosting McCain and criticizing Obama during the long campaign.
"This is the beginning of a new chapter, and I know that my colleagues in the Senate Democratic Caucus were moved not only by the kind words that Senator Reid said about my longtime record, but by the appeal from President-elect Obama himself that the nation now unite to confront our very serious problems," Lieberman said after the vote.
Anger toward Lieberman seems to have softened since Election Day, and Democrats didn't want to drive him from the Democratic caucus

They need his vote.
Exactly, when they thought they’d hit 60, they didn’t need him. Now they do. I hope he votes with the Repubs, though I know he won’t.
Just another Democrat (and many RINO’s) politician. No surprise. Staying in office always more important than Nation or principle. And that is why we are where we are.
So what did all that republican ass-kissing get them?
Politics as usual
bad breath
“There are some (statements) that I made that I wish I had not,” Lieberman told reporters. “In the heat of campaigns, that happens to all of us, but I regret that. And now it’s time to move on.”
Joe, just backed the wrong horse and doesn’t want to be left out in the cold. The man is totally gutless and has no firm beliefs. He’ll say anything to advance himself.
POWER, MONEY and EVIL = RATS .............
“As punishment”
I hope Joe says a nice, big collective “screw you” to the Liberals, and votes with the Conservatives.
He won’t... he’s rolling over like a cheap whore...playing kissy face with the libs - dems again... no matter how mnay times they screw him, he’s a democrat at heart and always will be!! So much for democrats with principles...that leaves one, Zell Miller!
too bad: Sarah would have taken on the “Good Old Boy” network
Whores! They are all just a bunch of whores...
Well, then, he should feel right at home caucusing with his own kind.
Lieberman has a lower American Conservative Union rating for his voting record than Harry Reid.
That’s not likely to change. He’s about as liberal as you can get on domestic/social issues.
Only on the Iraq War and terrorism is he anything but an archetypal liberal Democrat.
Some people here have wanted to do the same thing to McCain over these past few years.
Independence it nice, but there comes a time when you have to vote the party line and be punished if you don't.
As Reagan said many years ago: "There are certain principles a party stands for and if you don't agree with them, you are free to leave the party."
That applies to Democrats as much as it does to Republicans.
Zig Zag Zell did the EXACT same Lieberman did... put on a nice dog and pony show at the GOP convention and endorsed the Republican nominee for President to get revenge on the Dems.... but when it came time to stand up and be COUNTED in keeping the Marxists from controlling the Senate, he sided with the Marxists. When Jeffords defected and the Senate was divided exactly 49-49 on whether Tom Daschle or Trent Lott would be leader, guess who "conservative" Zell voted to hand the reigns of power to?
That's right, Daschle.
"Principled" Zell Miller put party ahead of his alleged "conservatism". And he sure seems to love whoever is in power at the time.
