I don’t understand. Can’t you throw crap at them as they climb on board? It must be a big job to climb abord, and takover.

“Its crew of 25 includes citizens of Croatia, Great Britain, The Philippines, Poland and Saudi Arabia.”

Sounds like a decent training excersise for Poland’s new Special Forces, The GROM-Grupa Reagowania Operacyjno Mobilnego (Operational Mobile Response Group)

How soon before they start going after cruise ships?
The Achille Lauro and Leon Klinghoffer come to mind.
Lots of ready cash to be had.

History is clear. It doesn't matter how many warships you put into the area. The only way to suppress piracy is to prevent the pirates from having any safe ports.

To have an oil tanker seized right out from under the noses of the Navy is pretty embarrassing.

Are there no firearms on those ships?

if you are intervening and you capture pirates, is there a path to prosecute them?”

What an asinine question. Piracy on the high seas, is deserving of death. No one in their right might could believe otherwise, unless you want the world court and the court of public opinion to prosecute those who were pirated, and let the real pirates go.

There should be IMHO zero tolerance, and no mercy shown to any such activity. Piracy as we know it died in the 19th century.

The rebirth can only be attributed to the rich prize and little risk (apparently) for engaging in the crime. With the right security force, the right weapons, and the mission to let no one escape back to their homeland, and rules of engagement to support the mission It would take less than a year to end the latest version.

“One of the challenges that … you have in piracy clearly is, if you are intervening and you capture pirates, is there a path to prosecute them?

Bill Clinton, is that you?

During a February 2002 speech, Clinton explained that he turned down an offer from Sudan for bin Laden's extradition to the U.S., saying, "At the time, 1996, he had committed no crime against America, so I did not bring him here because we had no basis on which to hold him."

Just kill them and do something tasteful with their heads along the rail for the next batch.

This is a clash of civilizations, not an oral before the department head.

I’m shocked and appalled that I was a dumbass and didn’t plan for expanded piracy operations outside of where we were.

Damned. Quite making excuses and start killing the bastards. Take no prisoners unless you want to get some intelligence as to where their bases are, and then execute the SOBs.

You need Harrier, vertical-liftoff jets that can operate from the decks of cargo carriers as well as warships. They have more speed, better range, and carry more weapons than the slow helicopters.

Oh, by the way, I recall that the Navy/Air Force/Army/Marines have decided to discontinue producing the AV Harrier. Who was the dumbass who thought up and promoted this policy?

What is DOD coming too? A home for military losers?

We need leaders with guts and determination. Oh, I forgot, the Great One (not Mark Levin) is coming in and his advisors will emasculate what is left of our military.

How much more of this stupidity from the administration and brass are the American people going to take before they stand up and say “NO MORE”?

Watch the port of Eyl. The Admiral may have used an imprudent term in "shocked" but an attack over 450 nm of blue water certainly surprises me. That isn't casual, small-time piracy; an operation of that nature requires intelligence, logistics, and training.

But they have to land somewhere. Eyl.

How about equipping the crew with Super-Soakers, filled with Chlorox, Ammonia, whatever. Hell, in some “developing” countries, they spray schoolgirls with acid using squirt guns.

450 nautical miles off the coast of Kenya?

Sounds like the pirates have access to a Raider.

A quick dose of reality here.

Pirates, if so minded, could threaten to destroy the tanker in place. If loaded with oil (which I assume this is), would be an ecological disaster.

Knowing the way the Western world powers kow-tow to the greenies, you will actually have trouble convincing the politicians to destroy a coastline.

Arm the tankers and shoot anyone who approach un-invited.

Can't the captain hang 'em from the yardarm?

This may be a hostage situation ... with the ship itself as the hostage. You can’t unload the largest super tankers in all that many places. If you can’t sell the cargo, or operate the ship in ordinary commerce after seizing control what else is left?

IIRC the LOOP offshore from Port Fouchon [spelling?]LA is the only port on the US Gulf Coast that can off load the biggest of the big. The article does not say, but what is the cargo. Unless it is refined product, it would have to be sold to a refiner to be usable.

Double hull or no double hull a small group of idiots with low tech weapons can probably take out any tanker afloat without boarding. [If they can’t they can certainly do an inordinate amount of damage.] After they control the ship, a glorified Molotov cocktail would probably do the job.

The world must declare war on pirates. There should be no negotiations. Ship crews’ must arm them selves and defend themselves. International war ships must beef up their presence and shot to kill pirates. Pirates must be executed if captured. When hostages are taken, it should be treated like we would treat terrorists taking hostages and not give into calls for ransom. Indeed, it may take sinking a few ships to deter these villains.
