What the Russians intend to do is to attack one of the Polish interceptor silos, but in a manner that will cause minimum damage and casualties. This argument seems ridiculous to me. Certainly the Russians are aiming to have the option of taking out the interceptors in the case actual hostilities break out between themselves and the US or its allies. They are also looking for a way to position a wedge between the U.S. and its allies.
However, an unprovoked preemptive attack in peacetime would be wildly reckless on the part of the Russians. It would be far too risky a gambit with a much greater potential downside than likely upside for them.

Russia is still mad about Kosovo. And of course Russia likes warm water sea ports. I guess Poland figures they have notthing to lose and everything to gain from agreeing to host the missles if they look at their history

Obama was asked by a reporter about his views on the issue, he said, I think it makes perfect sense to deploy a system that works. But we have to make sure that the technology works.
If only he would use that logic on 'alternative energy'... But no, he will rather axe something that was actually proven to work and then go and to waste money and to deploy something that was proven not to.
