A real shame.
The roof collapsed on a vacant dump of house, on fire. There are over 60,000 abandoned houses in Detroit that are routinely a target of arson. He had 6 kids, married to the same gal, and was religous. Went to my High School.
Insurance fires?
“Fellow firefighters said Harris, a 17-year veteran, was the glue of the firehouse.
“Walter loved to laugh. It’s going to be hard to go through a day here without hearing his laugh,” said Lt. Steve Kirschner.
Harris has six children. The youngest is 1 and another is a Detroit firefighter.
“He loved his family so much. He was so proud of them,” said Kirschner.
Kirschner said he wanted Harris’ wife to know he talked about her all throughout the day Friday.
Harris was a man of faith and served as the department chaplain. “

One wonders...think “Devils’ Night” where they just do it for fun.
Thank you, Kwame, Coleman Young, et al.
Walter Harris, DFD
R.I.P.
This is the house on Sheridan and Kirby where Walter Harris died when the roof collapse on him.
Insurance on an abandoned structure in Detroit? Recall 1967?.
RIP Walter Harris. That POS city didn’t deserve a good man like you.
AMEN !!!
It is a shame. As long as no one was trapped in the house, the firefighter shouldn’t have been inside.
Hate to see a fellow firefighter lose his life. My department does not enter structures unless there is human life inside. No house or other structure is worth the life of one firefighter.
some guys have to go in no matter what.
I know but firefighting is all about getting in and getting the job done. It appears as if in this case the initial fire had been extinguished and the companies were overhauling the attic, looking for hotspots to prevent a rekindle. Even though the fire is out this can be a dangerous task as often times the structural integrity of a building cannot be fully determined. In this case the roof caved in. Sometimes it’s a stairway or a floor that gives way and down to the basement you go. Or the ceiling comes down on you.
Dangerous job firefighting. My prayers go out to the Harris family.
As a former volunteer fire-fighter, when an abandoned house burned, we did NOT make entry. It typically was called ‘Urban Renewal’ and we did what we could from outside. With a known abandoned house, if you know there is no one inside, why make entry?
I believe that VFFs are every bit the hero that LEO and our military are. Good for you.
