A Giddy Sense of Boosterism (The Media's Embarrassing Obamamania)
Washington Post ^ | November 17, 2008 | Howard Kurtz

Posted on 11/17/2008 3:12:29 AM PST by rightwingintelligentsia

Perhaps it was the announcement that NBC News is coming out with a DVD titled "Yes We Can: The Barack Obama Story." Or that ABC and USA Today are rushing out a book on the election. Or that HBO has snapped up a documentary on Obama's campaign.

Perhaps it was the Newsweek commemorative issue -- "Obama's American Dream" -- filled with so many iconic images and such stirring prose that it could have been campaign literature. Or the Time cover depicting Obama as FDR, complete with jaunty cigarette holder.

Are the media capable of merchandizing the moment, packaging a president-elect for profit? Yes, they are.

What's troubling here goes beyond the clanging of cash registers. Media outlets have always tried to make a few bucks off the next big thing. The endless campaign is over, and there's nothing wrong with the country pulling together, however briefly, behind its new leader. But we seem to have crossed a cultural line into mythmaking.

Yeah, I told everybody after the election was over-it’s the Kennedy/Camelot mythos/garbage/lies/crap all over again. Get used to seeing the cute pictures of the kids playing with the puppy in the Oval Office while Dad works on papers at his desk. Bush couldn’t buy a flattering picture or article-you’ll be hard-pressed to find a non-flattering one in this presidency.

Obama said his family plans to get a dog after settling into the White House. ``I don't think it would be good to get a dog in the midst of transition,'' he said.

And yet, with all this cheering, even The One's daughters are going to be disappointed. The dog he promised? It'll have to wait.

Obama said. That means ``we shouldn't worry about the deficit next year or even the year after,"

The responsible spending he promised? It'll have to wait too.

crossed a cultural line into mythmaking.

Some company is now offering Obama blend coffee, beans from Hawai'i, Indonesia and Kenya.

Now the loonies can sit in their Ojamas sipping java, waiting for their gas and mortgages to be paid.

Howie is a joke, just like the rest of the media.

This country has just elected a man we know little/nothing about, thanks in large measure to Howie and his pals in the Obama worshiping media.

Q. Why will President Obama get a new puppy for the White House?

A. Joe Biden is getting on in years.

With a smell like the Chicago stockyards?

All this CYA is just so comical.

Deadly dangerous for America but some are simply trying to resurrect the word ‘journalism’.

lol.... Buyer's remorse, from the WaPo? LOL!

Like the high school girl I knew 44 years ago who spent the night with a boy and then went around moaning about "her reputation" the next day. Too late now, honey!

Pathetic, now that they jumped the shark the media ponders “Did we go to far”?

I wan’t to know why these people can’t be charged with campaign contribution violations. They have given up any pretense of impatial reporting. They have become the media wing of the left. They have provided millions of dollars worth of in-kind contributions in the form of free air time.

There’s no way to take a flattering photo of that dog.

The creature does not have a “good side”

Yes, and we should hold the media accountable. They are worthless shills.

I have already seen two ominous signs: O's reference to Nancy Reagan's seances, and his reference to himself as a "mut".

The man has run nothing but a campaign and been a radical constitutional lawyer. We have made a huge mistake.

Obama said his family plans to get a dog after settling into the White House.

So the Secret Service can take care of the dog.
