"We have items for trading including salt. I don’t believe gold is worth having."

Calls to mind (again, coming full circle on a term's meaning,) the origin of one being "worth his salt."

(I was talking earlier of some people not being able to "bait a hook," and how strange it is that some of these terms have literally come full circle.)

Gold would still be worth having.

Somebody near you decides he wants to sell a couple acres, he might take gold.

You break your arm and have to go to the doctor. (if you can even find one).
If you DO find one, believe me, by the time you get to him, he will already have enough chickens to choke a goat. He will be up to his eyeballs in goods.
He will take gold.

But no doubt a dozen eggs can have a very high value!
