I need some positive reasons why not to plan for a SHTF scenario.

Most people wouldn’t know how to survive if they couldn’t stop at the grocery every night to buy their dinner, let alone how to cook it if there was no electricity

Boy, you got that right.

Although it’s been 30 years since I was a Boy Scout, I still live by the old motto, “Be prepared”.

Personally I’ve readied my sailboat for total self sufficiency, solar charges, water supply, fishing gear, stainless guns, and good knowledge of my area of Florida land and water. If the $hit ever really hit the fan I’m leaving chaos behind.

To me it’s not a matter of if but when the fan becomes feces encrusted. As a scholar and believer in biblical end times prophecy one thing is crystal clear, the “mark” mut be avoided at all costs which requires leaving all things behind that will involve the need for and using money.

Problem with generators is if the SHTF and you fire yours up, every mongrel in three counties will be at your door to nicely ask for some soup.

And some won’t be very polite about it.

(and don’t get me wrong, I have two generators, an 1800W and a 3500W)

Get some extra magazines while they are still cheap.
Last time they were banned they were selling for $100 a pop!

Most people literally can't bait a hook. The term has come full circle.

Yes, djf. You are so right. I’ll just make sure I make crappy soup. ;-)

There is a government site for preparedness:

http://www.ready.gov/

I wouldn’t move into the wilderness just yet, but being prepared is always a good idea.

Great analogy.

My husband deploys in a few weeks and has us stocked to the hilt and prepared for everything from economic issues (ten dollar gallon of milk) to staying warm should we have ice/snow storms and lose power. He's not a tin foil hat-er like me and even he is nervous about leaving us right now. Something just feels weird.

I’m very worried. I’m going to read the thread to see if someone talks you out of it.

My dad always says "There's a shitstorm on the horizon."

We are stocking up on food. I had always imagined that we would have a place in the country when SHTF happened, but am surprised to find myself feeling that SHTF may happen much sooner than I had thought. We aren’t really able to move now, so we will stay put.

Ask hubby to pick up a few extra magazines while he is shopping. Take a look at some rifle scopes when you shop, one of those can definitely improve the longer shots.

Congratulations on the anniversary of your wedding. May you enjoy many more!

It’s not about Obama. Obama trying to solve the economic crisis is like someone trying to catch a falling piano. The last estimate of money lost due to credit default swaps was 16 trillion dollars. The $750 billion bailout is a joke. It looks like we’re headed into a perfect economic storm. As for a breakdown of social order, I don’t know. Of course if unemployment already at 6.5% hits 19% as in the Great Depression, it’s not going to be pretty.

You might want to buy a couple of wheelbarrows while they’re still cheap. If treasuries are downgraded and the fed starts to monetize debt, you’ll need them along with some personal protection. Depending on where you live of course.

I’ve never been in Gander Mountain. How are they on sport-utility rifles?
