WASHINGTON (AP) -- Top Republican senators said Sunday they will oppose a Democratic plan to bail out Detroit automakers, calling the U.S. industry a ''dinosaur'' whose ''day of reckoning'' is coming. Their opposition raises serious doubts about whether the plan will pass in this week's postelection session.
Democratic leaders want to use $25 billion of the $700 billion financial industry bailout to help General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC.
Sens. Richard Shelby of Alabama and Jon Kyl of Arizona said it would be a mistake to use any of the Wall Street rescue money to prop up the automakers. They said an auto bailout would only postpone the industry's demise.
''Companies fail every day and others take their place. I think this is a road we should not go down,'' said Shelby, the senior Republican on the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.
''They're not building the right products,'' he said. ''They've got good workers but I don't believe they've got good management. They don't innovate. They're a dinosaur in a sense.''
Added Kyl, the Senate's second-ranking Republican: ''Just giving them $25 billion doesn't change anything. It just puts off for six months or so the day of reckoning.''

You are being nasty. I suppose you will want my Curta next.
The bailout is nothing but disguised protectionism. Yeah; that’s the answer since it worked so well during the Great Depression.
Demanding that the feds respect the following statutes that they have hypocritically been swearing to defend since the time of FDR would arguably shut down the renegade federal government.
Article I, Section 8, Clause 18: To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution (emphasis added) in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.10th Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
They’ll cave.
An Auto Industry Bailout Will Fail.
P.S. Did you know that the Big 3 U.S. automakers are also going to ask Canada for a bailout? They're holding off until they get the dough from U.S. taxpayers first.

Yeah, we’ll see.
Not so much “they’ll cave”. It’s a matter of the 25 billion deal becoming 75 billion to buy the votes of senators with an archery company in his state, or a fingernail file company or maybe paper flower companies.
The key here is the 700 billion was crafted by mostly the Dems. The GOP didn’t even send a rep until the final days. But it has transmorgrified into the GOP bailout bill for Wall Street. They want a piece of it.
That's short hand for we are about to put on a dog and pony show for the UAW. They don't have the votes!
Careful, I'll bet Bwanee has had a few bites on his ass that he welcomed and enjoyed....
“A strong stement from McConnel”
I don’t know which way he will go on this. Ky is the #4 vehicle producer in the USA, both Ford and GM have major plants here. I think he may not want to be out front on this issue.
You honestly want Senators to come up with a new business model for the auto industry? That is honestly the worst idea I've ever heard.
yes, it’s called capitalism and limited govt. About time we tried that.
That’s nice.
I’ll try to act surprised when the bailout (in a bigger form) passes anyway with Republican backing...
Sometimes you can not avoid protectionism, unless you also avoid not being conquered.
Semper Fidelis
To put it bluntly, the Big 3 are centered in MI, NY, OH, CA - all big blue states (with exception of OH, maybe)
What do Republican Senators, now mostly in the South, owe to those states?
In fact, these Republican Senators’ constituents, if they are auto employees at all, now are employees mainly of Toyota, Honda and BMW.
Does anyone believe the Pubs have finally figured out they do well in states with growing economies, not the states that are dominated by unions and govt.
The bailout if there has to be one, should require that the executives get a paycut and that manufactuering jobs are brought back to America.
And cancel the bailout for wallstreet altogther.
lol
Maybe the Pubs will stand up and not support their own demise.
eeeuuuwh...
