As I noted in a post during the Republican convention in September, there was something fishy about the Republicans' use of the slogan "Country First" in the recent campaign.
Why not "America First?" We got the answer the other day when the Bush administration continued its attack on the two U.S. Border Patrol agents who were sentenced to long jail terms for shooting and wounding a drug smuggler.
The Bush Justice Department continued to go after the men this week and succeeded in an effort to prevent any significant reduction in the sentences of former agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean.
Ramos was sentenced to 11 years and Compean 12 years for the incident in which they shot a man who was later caught smuggling drugs over the border. The Bush administration's persecution of the pair has outraged right-wingers all over America, but the administration has pushed ahead with the prosecution in an obvious attempt to curry favor with the Mexican government.
Bush of course also supports an immigration amnesty that would have amounted to an open-borders policy with Mexico.
Meanwhile Tom Tancredo, the Colorado congressman who has been ostracized by his fellow Republicans because he really does put America first, is asking President-Elect Barack Obama to pardon the agents.
"These are the kind of men whose government failed and destroyed them - all while they were serving a cause greater than themselves. These men deserve justice," Tancredo said in a letter to Obama.
This may be the ultimate embarrassment for the awful administration of George W. Bush. We've reached the point where it's necessary to appeal to a Democratic president to reverse the anti-American stance of a Republican.

After all this time, you still haven't read the District and Appeals Court opinions?
Contradictory according to who? Johnny Sutton?
Skimmed ‘em. R&C say one thing, Sutton’s sh*theads another. Voir Dire took take of anything that might have gotten in the way of Johnny “winning” the case to protect his drug snitch.
“America First”, my behind. This isn’t a nation worth defending anymore. Que sera sera...
Instead of wringing our hands over the demise of our founders’ great experiment, we better figure out how to game the system, and fast. That free money Hussein and the socialists are going to be doling out to their base of losers and parasites isn’t going to last forever. We taxpayers who have been dumping cash down the government toilet our whole lives and serving in the military better figure out how to get our hands on some before its gone.
Because it's not about the agents, it's about frustration over illegal immigration. Every day on this website you see stories about LEO's overstepping their bounds . . . just recently, it was Air Marshals. They are almost universally condemned for their actions (as they should be).
But not Ramos and Compean, they are noble patriots defending the Constitution and the American way of life.
Perhaps you should “skim” them again. Your specific question regarded Ramos and Compean lying about the shooting. Well, they didn’t lie about it to Aldrete-Davila, they lied about it to their fellow officers. Duh.
What on earth could it hurt to, AT MINIMUM, commute their sentences to time served? I just dont get it. That border is a lonely place.
They actually let the smuggler who escaped testify that he wasnt armed.
4000 dope runners die in northern mexico last year,,and he is the only unarmed pacifist with a van stuffed full of dope,,,,OH PLEASE.
That is what it seems like to me. I am a law enforcement officer, and it baffles me how cops get bashed but these Border Agents who lied get heralded. I take my oath very seriously, and I expect my fellow officers of any agency to do the same. And for the most part they do; the bad seeds are the ones who make the papers. And if they actually, through fact-finding, did wrong, they absolutely must be held accountable.
Once you lie about what you did, you should be toast. These are tough jobs, I know first hand, but lying is unacceptable. Mistakes? Yes, it happens, and not on purpose, but lies are another matter.
We can only hope.
Meanwhile, these were cops thinking they were soldiers.
There is a big difference and I want them and others like them in jail.
If you were to do the research and learn the facts of this case, I guarantee you it would make you sick. In fact, it makes me sick just thinking about it.
George W. Bush is already what you cannot say.
George Bush betrayed his oath to defend the Constitution, betrayed conservatives and has sold our country in to slavery to the socialists.
I think he is a POS! He defended us from terrorists, but turned us over to the marxists.
I no longer have any respect for him.
I think I have made my primary concern clear. Did the Agents give contradictory statements or not?
If President Bush doesn’t pardon Border Agents who abused their authority, you will lose respect for him?
Stop and think about what you are saying.
“pro border control signs”
The GOP made it clear at the convention where they stood, with Giuliani, Lieberman and other liberals given plum speaking roles. But conservatives knew long before that that we were screwed with this ticket and this president’s record.
These two law officers won’t make any last minute Bush pardon list—even assuming they did anything wrong—like Clinton and his international man of mendacity, Marc Rich.
Let me try this one more time. The agents were not sentenced to 10-11 years for giving conflicting statements; they were sentenced on the bogus charge of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.
I suspect that the slogan “Country First” may have meant something a little different to John McCain and Sarah Palin.
McCain really does consider himself as a fighter for our country—yet he really did support unlimited illegal immigration. He just doesn’t seem to get it. Sarah Palin I trust to do the right thing.
They didn’t abuse their authority. They did their job, and were punished for it. Railroaded by a crooked prosecutor and a president with an enormous blind spot for Mexico.
Sorry, I must not have been clear.
I have no respect for George W. Bush right now. The great damage he has done will continue to damage this country for generations to come. That is of course the nation even survives the aftermath of his deeds.
I voted for him twice and he betrayed that vote to appaise his socialist masters time and again.
Like McCain he loves sticking his finger in the eyes of conservatives.
He can burn in hell for all I care.
Maybe this will help: Can you cite and link the language of their conviction and also of their sentence, with legit links?
