Both the Democratic and Republican National Committees are likely to have new leadership next year.
Former Democratic Governor Howard Dean of Vermont is stepping down, having completely recovered from his unfortunate reputation as an erratic and wildly liberal 2004 presidential contender. As chairman of the DNC, he adopted a controversial "50-state strategy" that had the party pouring resources into states it normally didn't contest. His strategy paid off this year as Barack Obama won such states as Indiana and Virginia that had not voted Democratic at the presidential level since Barry Goldwater's landslide loss in 1964. Unknown yet is whom Mr. Dean's replacement will be, but it's certainly going to be someone President-elect Obama will have confidence in -- campaign manager David Plouffe comes to mind. On the Republican side, the jockeying to replace current GOP Chairman Mike Duncan has begun. Mr. Duncan has been a competent administrator and fundraiser but the widely perceived need for new blood in the wake of the party's second consecutive drubbing at the polls makes him unlikely to be re-elected. Several candidates are lining up to replace him. Michigan GOP State Chairman Saul Anuzis is actively campaigning on a platform of reinvigorating the party's grass roots and returning to basic conservative principles. South Carolina Party Chairman Kalton Dawson is touting his fundraising abilities as he rounds up votes among fellow RNC members.

He was sort of 'forced' on us almost like Dole was in the 90's. In both cases we pretty much knew we had a loser but tried to make the best of it.
Yes. His reputation is now as an erratic, wild liberal.
Newts whining would drive a grown man to drink.
Exactly. No one who supports the man-made global warming BS, is anything but a covert supporter of big government.
ROFLOL, knee slapper!
Thank you.
“I’m currently in the FRed Thompson camp...”
Speaking of whom...where the heck is he? I like Thompson but he never fails to disappoint. He started out as the great conservative hope, ran a completely lackluster campaign, and quickly fizzled.
I’m telling people out there. We need to clean house and stop holing on to the old.
Bush has done more damage to the conservative people in America than anyone and yet here they are in here saying prayers for him. Unbelievable.
We need more that prayer, we need action and people we can count on. We need people who will not turn against their base like Bush has done, when they are elected.
It doesn’t seem that the american public has a problem with barak obama.
List all the defects of obama. He is in a very visible job.
Now we’re talking about newt doing an invisible job.
One for which he is highly qualified to do.
What is the Job? It is defending the republicans from democratic attempts to totally zone out republicans from American politics for the next 40 years.
No one else in the republican party understands both the inside the beltway congressional game and how to play.
Newt is irrelevant in the Republican party going forward.
He has become a moderate/liberal idealog.
Newt (a.k.a. Gasbag)
We need someone young, hip and well-spoken that’s a serious conservative. Someone that would make it “cool” to be conservative. Someone that the youth would gravitate to. We need a conservative Obama. Newt is the one that said the Reagan era is dead. He’s not as solid as I think he should be.
Also, the left loves to portray the conservatives as “grumpy old men”. We need to get away from that.
Gingrich is a has been. We need someone new, someone who believes in upholding the Constitution, someone who can communicate, educate, and lead. There will never be another Reagan, but the more like him, the better.
You are right, but face it: We have too many "lose with honor" conservatives here for Newt to have a ghost of a chance. FR's bleeding deacons won't hear of it.
Problem is, Newt is in this only for himself, with Conservatism and the GOP coming in a distant second.
We gave him a heck of a congress 14 years ago. His first time around could be construed as squandering a mandate.
