I just added a WASR GP 10/63 to my stable. It’s a Romanian AK derivative that used to be @ $300 or so. I paid $450. There are a few issues to look for you can google but this is a great rifle from a cost/reliability perspective.

A good idea would be to either talk to a gun buddy/friend and see if they can source you something privately, contact an FFL to order through, or comb the shops until you find a good deal.

While I have seen many people rant about price increase there are a number of dealers that are trying to hold the line. It is equally important to have an adequate supply of ammunition.

Finally, don’t think you have to have an AR or AK. They’re sexy and have thier purpose but for most situations there are rifles you can get on clearance sales at Walmart that will protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I should have said I was suspicious of the motivation behind the article; I know they are accurate because in my visits to local gun shops over the past two months, I have noticed people buying in record numbers. Frankly, that is why I was there too. I want to ensure I have access to those things I am positive will be banned from sale in the immediate future: AR’s and magazines with more than 10 round capacity not to mention the costs of ammo will go up as the Zero’s government will try to curtail their purchase by raising excise taxes on ammo and firearms.

Same thing is going on here in Idaho and I know it is the same in my home state of Texas from friends and relatives there.

Boith for firearms of all types, and for ammo, particularly given the likely Obama administration's efforts to raise taxes on ammo be hundreds of percent.

Good idea to talk to those in the trade with whom you have done business before. This week I picked up a Bursa 380 and while there, the owner said he would cut me a deal on a Glock 23 if I was interested...going price was 550 and I got it for 465. He said he has no problem selling them at full price because he cannot keep them in the store but wanted to take care of his loyal customers as they will be back again.

Of course. We can’t even muster interest to go over the Georgia and try and stop their supermajority take down in the runoff election. I’m sure Atlanta outwards is now crawling with Obama volunteers, lawyers, organizers. It’s over.

In politics when you see enough guns trained on you, go along becomes the operative. California Republicans can probably expound at length on the subject. When there are enough Obama guns trained on the beleaguered local precinct republican in Oopahloopaloosa county Georgia, that official is going to buckle under the pressure and get out of the way. It's human nature. Here's a pic of an Obama official interacting with the local authorities in Georgia No country for old men:

Went to a local dealer Thursday — the parking lot was packed, the store was packed.

I did note 3 cars with obama stickers.

Nice — they vote for the guy, then rush to buy firearms.

They weren't there buying guns, they were there taking down names and license plates.

We will get new gun control from Pelosi/Reid/Obama. They believe the AWB, repealing the Tihart amendment and a whole host of other measures are all reasonable restrictions that don’t violate our RKBA.

The next big thing on the horizon, however, will be the demonization of the gun owner. Kinda like SUV drivers and smokers.

The AR has crossed my mind, but it ain’t cheap. And then again, it’s just goning to get more expensive if a ban comes on deck in 2009.

Consider picking up a stripped AR lower receiver. That's the serial-numbered part, so you can pick that up for around $150.00 (though prices are increasing again). Most local gun dealers charge between $30.00 and $50.00 to receive the shipment and run it through their books.

After you have the lower receiver, everything else can be gathered via mail-order. I did it that way back when the Bush 41 presidency was drawing to a close. I even bought some extra lowers and later sold them at a 100% + profit - and the buyers still got a good deal.

When you buy it in sub-assemblies, it all just snaps together. Have a look at dsgarms.com - they have the molded polymer Cavalry Arms lower receivers in stock. I suspect they won't last more than a few weeks.

I would get those Obama stickered cars tag numbers and report that the newly purchased gun I just bought was stolen from my vehicle while I was shopping later and saw that vehicle nearby.

“...the costs of ammo will go up as the Zero’s government will try to curtail their purchase by raising excise taxes on ammo and firearms.”

....I expect you’re right....and BTW that excise tax is supposed to go to wild life habitat improvement so that we will always be able to hunt in this country....under Clinton he started giving the money to anti-hunting groups like the Sierra Club...I look for Obama to do the same.

I would've had a hard time refraining from calling out "Excuse me... who owns the (describe three cars)?" After they identified themselves, I would've flat-out asked them to explain the seeming contradiction. In front of the store employees and all the other restless natives.

Right on. Over the last couple of decades I've sold off some pretty cool ordnance. As far as effectiveness goes, my $59.95 used SKS is as good as any. A Marlin Guide Gun in .450 is all I really covet now.

According to many here, that is no contradiction.

Actively shooting down Mccain, hoping Obama wins, so that the country will finally see how bad dems are, and conservatism becomes stronger, and the WH and Senate and HOR are swept back to our side.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

*** I been thinking about making a purchase, but I am not sure what is most sensible to buy. Money is tighter than I would like right now. ***

What's 'sensible' to you may NOT be 'sensible' to someone else and is a hard question to answer.

As to money: a 'Defender' type shotgun can be had for about $250.00 NEW from many manufacturers. The SKS noted above is also 'cheap'. Used Colt or S&W revolvers in excellent condition are also inexpensive. So are some 9mm semi-automatics.

Oh and one 'assault rifle' always on the gun grabbers list is the Hi-Point Carbine (9mm), they go for about $200.00 NEW (I have one).

I hope I didn't totally confuse you :-)
But as you see selecting a firearm is a very personal thing.
