Fire Forces Evacuations, Burns Homes in Sylmar Area

Sayre Fire is near the 210 Freeway in Northern Los Angeles.

A dangerous, fast-moving brush fire in the Sylmar section of the San Fernando Valley, spread by gusting 50 mph winds has now burned at least five homes and is threatening several more, City Fire Department spokesperson Melissa Kelly said today.

So far there are no reports of injuries to residents or fire personnel, said Kelly.

The blaze ignited about 10:30 p.m. in the dry, brushy hills above 13000 W. Sayre Street near Shablow Ave, and has so far consumed more than 500 acres.

Thanks for the update, if this was some jerk car chase Fox would be covering it until dawn. I think this is more important, especially for us with friends and relatives in California.

Just know what I'm reading here. Good friend has daughter and son in law living in general area. They have had to evacuate in the past. My friends are at a deer hunting camp in Mississippi since Thursday, so no info.

No threats to Torrence at this time. Fires are miles away from there right now.

Thank you! I was a little stressed there for a minute. I talked to my son today and he didn’t seem to know much about the fires and they were going to soccer practice but I thought maybe the fires had gotten worse.

Fires have gotten worse. Growing bigger and new starts in new areas.

Nearest fire to Torrence is the Rancho Palo Verdes fire to the south about 10 miles

This is just awful. I am praying for everyone out there.

How do fires just pop up like that?

The wind is howling today in many areas.

Embers blowing miles downwind start new fires
People tossing lit cigs
High wind knocks down power lines that spark off a fire
Arsonists lighting them
Homewowners using edgers or welders throw sparks into tinder dry brush

etc. etc. etc.

The closest I’ve heard of was in Rancho Palos Verdes about a couple of hours ago.

Obama will raise his arms and speak in a magisterial voice, cowing those fires into submission. They're BUSH'S fault, after all.

Prayers for the homeless. I hope there's still a lake left that doesn't contain non-native sucker fish so the bombers can fill up. (I've always wondered about CA...why don't they use seawater? Will it endanger the sea or something?)

FOX News has the Yorba Linda Water District guy on the phone....says the pump station burned down. There should be a water tank on the top of the hill!

Are you kidding? Those tanks are an eyesore, there'd be protests about them. Then the Impact report about all the native species that are disturbed by putting the tank in....

Am I one of the few who is old enough and enough of a long term LA native to remember Dr. George's disaster documentaries where he went through all the causes of the great LA fires, how homeowners need pumps and generators to turn their pools into water supplies for firefighters, etc? As it really seems like the same problems happen year after year after year.

Thanks. I am in Texas and not familiar with the area, but like all Mom’s I get scared to death when I think one of my babies is in danger. I am worried for everyone there and am praying that this just stops.
