Actually we do. It's a courtesy title based on your highest office. President Clinton is properly called "Mr. President" for as long as he lives.

Ture, but it is how it is- Senators Presidents Speakers all are called by the former titles as a sign of respect.

Many titles, President, Governor, Senator and Ambassador, remain with the person, as a form of address. We unfortunately still refer to President Carter, for example.
