I visited the reconstructed ruins of Fort La Union, a national monument on the Santa Fe Trail near Las Vegas NM. It was a huge fort and supply base with big warehouses and shops. It served everything to the west.
The U.S. Army has been in the heavy duty logistics business since the very beginning. The Army logisticians conquered the western frontier.

I’ve probably been there; we used to drive across New Mexico every year when I was a little girl. I think logistics is a fascinating field of study, how they organize and move such huge amounts of everything ... or fail to. A case can be made that the Confederate Quartermaster Corps lost the Civil War.
