WASHINGTON (AP) — From its humble beginning 33 years ago at Fort Sill, Okla., the career of Ann E. Dunwoody is ascending to a peak never before reached by a woman in the U.S. military: four-star general. At a Pentagon promotion ceremony Friday, Dunwoody was adding a fourth star and later, at Fort Belvoir, Va., — her birthplace — being sworn in as commander of the Army Materiel Command, responsible for equipping, outfitting and arming all soldiers. Just five months ago, she became the first female deputy commander there.

"But Logistics are certainly crucial to winning any war."

Generals Eisenhower and Marshall would agree!

Our next presidential candidate. Or if Sarah does agree to run, then she’ll be VP.

From what I hear from my son, they will soon. The OCS candidates he's been training with are some major hotties AND they're just as athletic and competitive. Some of the beauties who graduated West Point this year could have had a cover on Vogue.

Angelina Jolie in Uniform from what I saw. You guys had better treat them right in the best sense of that admonition.

Are you looking for favoritism base on gender? Definitely sounds like it.

Thanks for that. I agree - 4 stars, with very few exceptions, earn it. Regardless of plumbing or how you feel about women serving, this general officer deserves respect. And no, I’m not suckin’ up, I don’t even know her.

Colonel, USAFR

I’ve been thinking about Gettysburg recently, and I think the outcome would have been different if the South’s gigantic artillary barrage (loudest sound ever in North America up til that time?) would have been more effective. They overshot their targets and so didn’t “soften up” the North at all.

Do you know much about the Civil War? Was the South just always pretty bad at aiming/shooting their cannons? Or just at Gettysburg?

Logistics is key to winning any engagement. The Army has done an excellent job of logistics management and innovation and continues to push the other Services to do the same. There is much to be said for coordinated Service Logistics, and I think the Army is strongly in favor of this. It is already being done in the medical field; I suspect since I recently retired it’s probably spreading to other fields as well. If she is responsible for consolidated/coordinated Service logistics, then she’ll need those 4 stars to go toe-to-toe with her male operational counterparts.

Congrats to the General—I’m glad you’re breaking the glass ceiling! Esp. in the logistics field (as a former boxkicker, I know!), which has always been a good ole boys club.

Weasley Clark? You assume I was for this pussy? I was opposed to him from the start. He got FIRED. He wanted to start a war with Russia. Don't EVEN go there. We need more warriors in our service not NBA’s. Combat experienced guys that want to serve not just pad their resumes’.

The feminizing of our military is almost complete. Just in time for Barack’s “manly” civil defense corps.

Could somebody please explain to me why there are so many insulting replies? Did I miss something?

That's the REAL poison of affirmative action - every member of a protected-group has their achievements doubted.

Very true. But Logistics are certainly crucial to winning any war. She must be darn good.

Wise old saying: amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics.

Just came over from supply.
Were you good at that?
Yes, sir!
Well then, stick to it ...

Don't know why that came to mind other than it was on the tube the other day. :)

Logistics wins wars.

If she is good at assembling a staff, delegating authority, maintaining good order and discipline and does the job, meaning that she's able to somehow figure out how much water, ammo, toilet paper, paper clips, fuel, batteries, radios, tampons, mail, MRE's, pogey bait, maintenance equipment, oil, tires, tents, helmets, boots, medical supplies and the million other things that make a fighting force effective for long periods of time a long way from supplies........ well good for her.

What a sh#tty job. Thank God that somebody does it. I would be found out back with an empty bottle of Jack Daniels and a gun barrel rattling on my teeth.

Think about it... logistics.... If she's been a logistical officer in support of our current deployments, then she's been tested "in combat". Long supply lines and distant units.

Most men that have experience will invariably credit logistical support for long term success. Like Maj. Gen. Pagonis.

I think this is all part of an "equivalence" paper put out by the Army or Defense Department in order to make sure that a person of certain rank is in charge of a certain number of units that provide logistics. It is basically stating that it takes a 4-Star individual to be in charge of logistics for our fighting forces. The fact that she's a .... "she" probably reflects more on her dedication to the job and ability to traverse the minefield of flag officer promotions and career paths...... oh and to prove to the new administration that they'll play ball in order to keep funding.

Anybody really think that politics doesn't play a role in top level promotions is foolish. Of course that's just my opinion... and I could be wrong.

Does Free Republic support our men and women in uniform, or not?

In case it's passed your notice, FR isn't a monolithic entity -- there are plenty of opinions and personalities around here. Don't let a few jokesters ruin your day.

I'll bet she's a great lady, and not a nut-case like the General Sherman of Abu Ghraib. But affirmative action is not good policy anywhere, least of all the military. I wouldn't begin to question that she's good at her current specialty. I just see no reason to go from "She's a wiz at logistics" to "Pin 4 stars on her." A general's authority derives from his being a combat-hardened leader of men. That's something else.

Meanwhile, I have no problem with PM Maggie Thatcher or POTUS Sarah Palin. It's the distinction between administering and executing.

I forgot to add this. If Bush nominated her, I believe she's probably VERY qualified.

He may be wrong about a lot of things but he's been very consistent about NOT playing games with our military.

I really am mystified by some of his choices theses last 4 years but God Bless him. and God Bless Gen Dunwoody. I wish her success and may she help us kick the cr#p out of the muzzies wherever they hide.

Congrats, General.

(What aspects of conscription might she be responsible for once we require a draft?)
