Black, white or neither? The mixed race dilemma

Barack Obama has identified himself as a ‘mutt'. We, too, should acknowledge our fastest-growing ethnic minority

In America in the spring of this year, 2008, a widow named Mildred Dolores Loving died at the age of 67. Let me hand the story over to the late Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, Earl Warren, writing in 1967.

“In June 1958,” Warren explained, “two residents of Virginia, Mildred Jeter, a negro woman, and Richard Loving, a white man, were married in the District of Columbia pursuant to its laws.” But not pursuant to the laws of their native Virginia. When they returned to the state and set up home in Caroline County, a Virginia grand jury indicted them for violating the local ban on interracial marriages.

“On January 6, 1959,” Warren continued, “the Lovings pleaded guilty to the charge and were sentenced to one year in jail; however, the trial judge suspended the sentence for a period of 25 years on the condition that the Lovings leave the State and not return to Virginia together for 25 years. He stated in an opinion that: ‘Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix'.”

Takes you back to the good old days ...when judges looked to
the bible for answers instead of some international or foreign court precedent.

Probably Aryan, since he’s the leader of the new National Socialist Party.

They call them Coloureds in South Africa. People who are neither white nor black. It can be hard to have a foot in both worlds.

Thus further confirming the left’s obsession about race.

Known as “Pardos” in Brazil, where they comprise 40% of the population.

1. Although the judge invoked the name of God, it's not clear that his ideas came out of the Bible.

2. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm not sure that the Bible is considered an acceptable form of court precedent.

3. Doesn't it bother you to be contributing to a stereotype that your state is probably trying to overcome.?

The only "race mixing" the Bible prohibits is between Israelites and non-Israelites.

Hm. If my church banned the interracial marriages from our congregation (such are mostly Asian-Caucasian and most but all "first-generation") our numbers would be severely cut -- not to mention losing our priest, organist, choir director and much more.

I remember the times and culture against interracial marriage, but I don't recall a Biblical prohibition against same. And neither, it appears, does our bishop or archbishop.

What dilemma? Today, most of us are mutts. I'm a mix of German, English and Choctaw. Not sure which is dominate and I don't care. It's not the color of a person's skin or their pedigree that matters, but the content of their character. Obama’s character is sadly lacking.

Though what America was founded on, that's not a sentiment that could be used to political advantage.

German, English, Choctaw, not sure there are any voting blocs there, BHO would have you make up that missing fourth ancestor. Someone from Kansas or Kenya would be nice, it's a K year.

Suspect most US families that have been here more than 150 years are mutt, containing people who were considered low status or undesirable somewhere. Within my extended family, we include English, highland Scots, lowland Scots, Welsh, Irish, Swede, Laplander, Choctaw, Cherokee, German, French, Slovakian, Jewish, and Japanese, Metis, and probably Melungeon. There have been circus performers, indentured servants, Signers of the Declaration of Independence, at least one bank robber, at least one moonshiner, career army, preachers, farmers, weavers, slaveowners, tenant farmers, iron masters, muscians and post masters.

There are none of us pure...somewhere, somehow, some of us had ancestors in groups that were considered less desirable and suffered persecution.

This is the human experience.

Actually, I do have a Kansas connection. I also have a "grapes of wrath" connection. My maternal grandparents migrated from Oklahoma to California during the dustbowl. I grew up with the "make do, or do without" motto.
