Democrat takes lead in Alaska Senate race (Dems stealing AK, MN)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Just as Sen. Ted Stevens appeared ready to take his criminal record back to Congress — perhaps opening a door for Gov. Sarah Palin to replace him — his re-election bid faltered.

Democrat Mark Begich, who trailed Stevens by more than 3,200 votes to start the day Wednesday, jumped to an 814-vote lead as state officials resumed their count of early and absentee ballots. The tally late Wednesday was 132,196 to 131,382, with an estimated 30,000 ballots remaining to be counted, some on Friday and some next week.

"After watching the votes today, I remain cautiously optimistic," Begich, a two-term Anchorage mayor, said in a news release. "We ran an aggressive campaign, especially when it came to early voting and absentee."

"The way to stamp it out is to create a voter-card and then a live-online database (or even a “static one” which records this information for accumulation later on) which records that someone has voted already (with that card). That card can only be issued to voters who are qualified for the state that they are in and the address that they have. That’s the way to eliminate this kind of fraud."

I do all my banking on-line. I do all my bill-paying on-line. I deal with the DMV on-line, I deal with SSI, Medicare, IRS on-line. I make credit card purchases securely on-line. I deal with my insurance on-line. All of this securely on-line....

I agree with you! Can anyone tell me in this day and age that we cannot upgrade our voter registration securely so that every voter that registers are as vetted, legal and secure as a Social Security card, driver's license or major credit card? <[I still do advocate the hard-copy card ballot with circle filled in by indelible pen then run through a scanner...kept for possible later re-count.]> However, every banking or credit card transactions on-line or physically at point-of-purchase I'm given a receipt or an invoice. Why can't I have one for my vote? There has to be a better, more secure way and one that will give voters confidence and not cause the to adopt a "why bother?" attitude about being involved if it's all a scam or rigged.

I, for one, won't waste my time if it's not repaired and upgraded. We've had this crap in the 2000 and 2004 and 2006 elections. Are we that stupid, lazy or is this the way we just do away with elections?

Election night it looked like Repubs might have had a reasonable 44 seats. I thought they could take back a majority by 2012, especially if Obama’s plans do not work out that well. But now forget it. If Chambliss manages to win and they come out of this with 41, it will be like that 1958-1980 period again. Republicans will probably not be able to take a majority for many cycles, if ever, thanks to changing demographics and Demo cheating.

Thank you Travelor for explaining this to everyone. Nothing is stolen, we all know that Republicans vote early, Dem’s vote late if at all. If there were residual ballots to be counted, whether mail in or whatever, there’s a good chance that they will be Democratic leaning.

Very true. We should all work for something like this.

I can’t cry for Stevens. He dug his own grave a long time ago.

It is statistically impossible for every single close race in which Republicans lead to switch to a Dem winner during lengthy counts and recounts.

I disagree, Castro and Saddam always won, why not Dem candidates?

After the WA state governor's contest in 2004 that the 'Rats stole in broad daylight under everyone's nose, a lot of the 'Pubs up there were willing to lie down for it because they promised that "the next time around" they were going to win by so big a margin that the 'Rats couldn't cheat their way in. Well, guess what happened the next time around? The 'Rat won by an even bigger margin (something like 6.5%). The whole hyped-up rematch was a flop. I said at the time of the first theft the 'Pubs were done because once a 'Rat gets in they are very, very difficult to flush out.

Not to mention the whole "win bigger next time so they can't cheat" concept is profoundly undemocratic. Think about what they are advocating. It says essentially one party starts out at an almost insurmountable disadvantage: they have to win not just a majority of the votes, but a super-majority in order to be elected. This is not the kind of elected representative government envisioned by the Founders. Once you require one side to have to win a super-majority, the whole concept of self-government is fatally undermined.

Franken is a disgrace but so is Stevens.

Why wouldn’t their constituents cheer them on?

Because they're undermining the democratic process and destroying their country.

I wouldn't sit still for it if the GOP was doing it. But then, I give a damn about my country.

WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS? WHERE ARE THE REPUBLICANS???

I wish I knew.

You said — “IMHO, the dims are stealing AK and MN because the “new votes” are disproportionally dim.”

Ummmm..., stole the election because they registered more Democrats and got more Democrats out to vote...?? LOL...

This must be the “Fairness Doctrine” applied by the Republicans to the issue of “voter parity”.... :-)

Your opinion is proof of nothing. The original ballot count is ongoing. I see no evidence of “stealing the election” whatsoever.

The implied explanation about all the “corrections” favoring Democrats is that people who vote Democrat are less educated and/or less intelligent than those who vote Republican—therefore if mistakes or misunderstandings are made they will be made by Democrats. Dems don’t come out and say that, but it’s the implication I read into what they do say.

"You know, comrades," says Stalin, "that I think in regard to this: I consider it completely unimportant who in the party will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this —- who will count the votes, and how."

We do have Republicans counting the votes too you know. Not every volunteer in this country is a liberal.

True.
But his proven that liberal/democrat districts have ways of finding “new” votes all the time.

On Indian reservations.
In the back seats of cars.

They’re usually cast by military, elderly, and folks traveling out of state, aren’t they?

Under normal conditions, those voters would tend to go GOP. But, those are also the groups of people who would be turned off by Stevens legal and ethical problems. I don't see anything amiss here.

The PROBLEM is that all the newly found ballots are for the Dem and they are being "found" in the back seats of cars and in districts that are 98% Dem.

The PROBLEM is that you didn't read the article. These are not "found" votes, these are absentee and early votes that are still being counted. Its a close race and not at all unusual that the lead should change as counting continues. Especially when the one currently behind is a corrupt piece of sh*t.
