John DiStaso's Granite Status: Sununu not ruling anything out
The Union-Leader ^ | November 13, 2008 | John DiStaso

JUST MAYBE. Maybe this "draft Sununu for Republican National Chairman" thing isn't a waste of time.

It's not something we'd expect Sen. John Sununu to want to get into. Sure, he lost his reelection bid, but he's young, he has a growing family and, politically speaking, he still has a bright future and, with his independent streak, he isn't someone we'd think would want to become the face of the establishment Republican Party, not to mention take part in the very inside baseball game of running for the post.

But, surprisingly, Sununu didn't close the door to it yesterday.

Sununu is apparently still "underground" since his loss, steering clear of interviews, but we did receive this comment on the RNC chairmanship via his Senate office:

"I really haven't begun to consider any particular option, and certainly haven't ruled anything out. Over the next few weeks, I will sit down with my family, weigh the opportunities, and begin making decisions about the future."

Not much, but the key phrase is, "haven't ruled anything out."

.

WHAT ABOUT MERRILL? And that makes state Republican Finance Chair Jim Merrill happy.

Merrill, who initiated one of two draft-Sununu movements in recent days, said he's pleased Sununu "remains open to the prospect of running for RNC chair" and said Sununu would do an outstanding job of leading the party out of the wilderness.

And what of Merrill's own plans? He's been rumored to be very interested in running for chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party, which will hold an election of officers in January.

Merrill, who had been Mitt Romney's state campaign manager during the presidential primary, said he has been asked "by a number of people to consider serving in that capacity. But it is not something I'm going to do at this time."

He cited family and professional responsibilities. Merrill is managing director of Devine Strategies, a consulting subsidiary of the Devine Millimet law firm.

Meanwhile, the names of unsuccessful Executive Council candidate and outgoing Rep. Steve Stepanek, veteran strategist Jay Flanders and former Manchester GOP Chairman Gerry Thibodeau also have been floated in the past several days in connection with the party chairmanship. Current chair Fergus Cullen has not yet decided whether he will run for reelection.

The GOP needs to have leadership with no significant ties to either Bush Admin. Bush the Elder got us Clinton. Bush the Younger got us Obama. We need something else now. I all Bushed out.

That’s all we need. A defeated RINO to lead the party.

They also need to have conservative leadership that understands how strongly the base feels about the immigration issue; Sununu is the WRONG man for the job.

Sununu has a life time ACU rating of 92.33. How is he a RINO? On immigration, NumbersUSA gives him an “A-”

He is a liberal like his father... ACU or no ACU... just say NO! We need a Gladiator not a loser that could not win reelection.

You have set the bar so high, only a handful of people can qualify as a conservative. I suggest you take a look at Sununu’s voting record and positions on the issues. I am a Conservative and I consider Sununu to be a conserative. You sound like a Ron Paul libertarian.

Let me ask you this... do you think he can go head-to-head with begala or carville and shut them down... will he be able to back down prissy matthews and do it with humor and knowledge? I do not.

I would say yes based on his debate performances with Shaheen. I watched them all on CSPAN. He is articulate, smart, and can think on his feet despite the fact that he got his BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from Harvard.
