Romney, GOPers lick wounds on cruise
The Swamp ^ | 11/12/2008 | Jim Tankersley

Winners, we all know from a lifetime of post-Super Bowl commercials, go to Disneyland.

Losers, at least in this election cycle, apparently go to the Caribbean.

As the Associated Press' David McFadden reports:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - When Joe Six-pack suffers a severe setback, he might cry in his beer. The Republican elite could be found this week on a Caribbean cruise after being stung in the Nov. 4 elections.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson joined policy analysts and 700 subscribers who want to revive the Republican Party on the cruise hosted by the National Review, a conservative magazine.

~ snip ~

"No one's jumped overboard," Fowler quipped as passengers disembarked in Old San Juan. "This is a forward-thinking group."

Thompson, whose own bid for the GOP nomination was short-lived, tersely answered a few questions from shoreside journalists before walking up the narrow cobblestone streets in shorts and sneakers. He called the cruise a family vacation, and said he is not planning another White House run.

~ snip ~

This cruise, the 21st hosted by the National Review, mixes leisure and politics, but Fowler said there are no panels about John McCain's running mate.

Most of the passengers booked oceanview and veranda cabins at $2,400 to $3,000 per person, according to the Cruise Authority, the U.S. company that arranged the trip. The ship is stopping in Turks and Caicos Islands, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Bahamas before returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida this weekend.

How is it that many FReepers could plainly see their weaknesses during thier bids for POTUS? Fred was a non-issue, almost pretending to run for POTUS, Romney weak also, easily seen and frustrating. McCain also very weak, not fighting, not vetting this phony POTUS candidate Obama with all his baggage. Disgraceful. Other than Jindal (sp?) and Palin we HAVE NO LEADERSHIP so what do we expect? We had a long line of milquetoast candidates that should have been disqualified from the get-go. Ditto the Dems but we were too cowardly to take the fight to them, too cowardly. With such clear-cut opportunities and by not taking advantage of those opportunities we deserve all that we get because we allowed it to happen.

We gave our party such great victories and they gave it ALL AWAY without a fight, they went down without a whimper.

Pathetic losers gathering together still plotting and scheming no doubt. It’s time to show all pretenders and RINOs the door. Thompson needs to continue his acting career but all this falls in our lap too. We were being stupid by not demanding that they do their job, we act like willing sheep also following our little “mini-messiahs”.

I know that C. Buckley is on that cruise; recent updates of the NRO website mentioned this. However, there are some on the cruise who I like: VDH, Mark Steyn. So, rather than a Poseidon adventure, perhaps Buckley will fall overboard (while attempting to catch glimpses of himself from the reflection of the water), and his fellow travelers will show the same enthusiasm in answering his cries for help that he shows his illegitimate son: none.

I saw an interview of our Gov. Perry with palm trees in the background. Knew he wasn’t in Austin.

"this is a cruise that is planned every year and is available for anyone who wants to go(provided you fork over the cash.) it is not elaborate or over the top like the events planned by billionaire dems. the article is misleading at best and borders on outright misrepresentation. people should complain to the reporter for his mischaracterization."

Thanks for that info.

I'll leave it to you to complain to the "reporter".

I'm rather busy stuffing cotton in my ears to drown out the screams of the dying, and burying my arms before the 0bammer coppers come to take them away.

I supported Fred in the Iowa caucus, but now I wonder if he was just running interference for McCain.

Agreed. Either of those two men would be fine. They could actually work together — one as a spokesman and one on the issues.

Perhaps I haven't made my feelings on the subject of GOP cruises (to nowhere) quite clear enough.

How's this? If I were a Democrat Party submarine skipper, I wouldn't bother to torpedo that cruise ship. They are my allies.

I haven’t been able to keep up with news for the last couple of days . . . BUT I can’t help thinking about these jokers enjoying their cruise - it’s like an alternative universe!

With all these high powered GOP *leaders* gathered together at this moment in time WHILE election 08 FRAUD is *still being perpetrated* in Minnesota, Georgia, and probably Alaska -

is there a peep coming from any of them?

All their plans are a WASTE if we have no guarantee of free and honest elections in the USA anymore.

I believe you are giving McCain way too much credit. The MSM has always attacked Republicans viciously. Why was it so significant in this election and not in the prior two Presidential elections?

True, McCain was saddled with Bush's low popularity and an ailing economy. But, he clearly wasn't a Bush disciple and often was a Bush opponent. He failed to use that to his advantage. Rather than use his strength as a budget cutter, he openly embraced a Socialistic financial bailout with Obama. He was a weak campaigner. He lost three consecutive debates. His opponent had a very liberal record and little experience that he failed to exploit. He refused to attack him on Reverend Wright, gun control, Gay marriage, and his lack of experience. McCain looked old, tired and slurred his words. He was a pathetic candidate and lost Indiana, Virginia, and even North Carolina. He ran the worst GOP campaign in my lifetime.

And I thought he was a scientologist!

But, he clearly wasn’t a Bush disciple and often was a Bush opponent.

the problem was he wasn’t a Reagan disciple either. He had to do everything HIS way without the benefit of something that had worked well before.
The whole essence of a conservative is to conserve what you have learned from the experience of others, history and the Word of G-d.
