Catholic Church Battling Obama On Abortion Issue
CBS ^ | 11/12/08 | Deb Garcia

Fresh off of his election victory, President-elect Barack Obama is already facing a fight from another opponent – the Catholic Church – on the issue of abortion.

"Anytime someone like him, someone with his position [on abortion] is elected to a major office, it increases the difficulty for us," Ed Mechmann, of the NY Archdiocese, said.

Mechmann says that at their annual meeting this week, the nation's Catholic bishops are discussing how to tackle Obama's support of the Freedom of Choice Act.

That act, which currently stands before Congress, seeks to overturn the 2003 legislation signed by President Bush that bans late-term abortions in some cases.

"I would expect legislative advocacy campaigns and postcard campaigns, e-mails, writing letters, encouraging people to meet with their local legislators," Mechmann said.

The 8 weeks of lengthy letters seemed to equate abortion with global warming and littering.

So true! It was way too long - there should have been a summary for it. I can read long docs, but it nearly put me to sleep. It was more of 'how to write a 50 page document and say nothing' rather than a help to form one's conscience. Our post V2 writings are too darn wordy.

The Catholic Church has been infiltrated by heretic Modernest theologians, communist stooges, Masonic tools, homsexual reprobates and assorted liberal useful idiots. Oh, but Vatican II was such a “watershed moment” for the Church. So, my prodigal sons and daughters, how’s that eccumenical love fest working for you? Can you say “auto destruct”? Yes, I knew you could. Time to return to Tradition.

That helps them with the ambivalent theology... they may interpret their wordy documents either in a traditional or Modernist sense... that is the game the V2 heretics are playing with the Catholic Faith. Don’t like it? Find a Traditional Church, and the real Catholic Faith.

This was a triumph of the MSM’s disinformation campaign.

I have a staunch Christian girlfriend who tends to be politically naive.

She asked me three times before the election, but isn’t Obama prolife? Are you sure? They keep saying he’s a Christian?

(I enjoyed telling her he went to the gym instead of church last Sunday)

No, 70% did not. The bishops and the Vatican did speak out, multiple times, loudly and more often than anyone else.

As a Catholic I can understand the frustration from those who are replying to this post who are not Catholic. Pro-life for me is the deciding factor in a candidate as all other issues fall after this “Choice”. You can not pretend to care for the poor or the sick if you do not care for them before they became that way. Do I wish the Church would speak more feverently against this horror....yes!!! I do however look at this a bit differently, in that now is the time to stand up and be heard, teach and engage in this from our homes to the capital and the Church is finally speaking out and taking the lead on this. If not now when? If not you then who?

My motto is “Abortion will continue to be legal and practiced in this Country as long as “Christians” continue to VOTE for it!” They are a large enough voting block to make a difference in the elections. But they, including some members of my family, insist on voting democrat regardless of the stance on butchering the unborn. They claim to be “born again”, yet won’t grant others the chance to be born the first time.

I’m not Catholic, but I did run into many in the MD, VA, and PA area who didn’t care about the abortion issue and supported Obama. Get upset if you want too but I have read articles where the Vatican praised Obama.

The key issue to all of this is ... people are going to have to understand they can’t have it both ways... the middle of the road gave us the most liberal, obnoxious, arrogant POS since the founding of this nation.

Off to find articles to prove my point on this one...

You done read wrong. I’m not upset, just don’t have time to educate you right now on the RCC’s consistent and constant position on Abortion.

My coworker is a Souther Baptist. He campaigned for Obama. I try not to judge the entire group of baptists by this idiot.

If the bishops had been doing their jobs for the last 40 years, we wouldn’t have had a generation of Catholic voters thinking it was okay to vote for someone like Obama.

As of 2001, 48% of blacks were Baptists. Look how they voted. What is wrong with the Baptist Church?

And Catholics are roughly 22% of the country versus 53% protestant.

BTW, the majority of white catholics voted for McCain. Black and hispanics prefered the marxist.
