Barack Obamas purported pick to guide the transition of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) may not bode well for free expression in the land of liberty.
The president-elect is expected to appoint D.C. lawyer Henry Rivera as transition leader for the FCC, according to Multichannel News.
Rivera is a Democratic former commissioner who served on the FCC panel from 1981 to 1985.
Following Riveras resignation in 1985, President Ronald Reagan appointed Patricia Diaz Dennis, who opposed the Fairness Doctrine. The law was subsequently repealed in 1987.
The law mandates that equal time be given on broadcast airwaves to opposing political viewpoints.
As the FCC in the past was forced to admit, the Orwellian Fairness Doctrine had the net effect of reducing rather than enhancing the discussion of controversial issues of public importance.
After the law was repealed, talk radio became a bona fide industry.
Obamas reported choice is no reach across the aisle pick. Rivera has been heralded for linking civil rights interests to communications policies...

I think I saw a bear crapping in the woods.
We are all screwed. This all started with the do nothing GOP congress. Our failures and inactions as a party has made the American people lose faith in us and so this is what we get. A large democratic majority. We seem to be blaming everyone else but ourselves. RHINO’s and Republicans really need to start purging the party of do-nothing by name hacks and get out there to our roots and help Americans.
Argh, I still have to serve at least 3 years in the Army. I am almost certain a lot of individuals are looking to get out at this point in time. Not a whole lot of folks respect President Obama and want to serve under him...
If this misnamed “Fairness” Doctrine does not apply to the alphabet networks and everything else that goes out over the airways, we may need to find a way to take it to the Supreme Court. This farce is clearly a violation of the First Amendment. No ifs, ands or buts.
They plot revolution, why can’t we plot counter-revolution?
Well, change works both ways, and these communist pussies better bring an army.
Clever of these totalitarians to hide themselves among the ranks of the lawyers. Or maybe not so clever. Push the people enough it might not be nice to be a lawyer anymore.
Here's the trick to pull. Pick up shares in SeriusXM just between bankruptcy and the announcement that Rush is moving to Satellite. Should be an easy 10-bagger. Likely 10 times that.
So Colinoscopy Powell endorses Zero and his son’s firing is the thanks he gets? I would say, “That’s rich,” but I feel sorry for young Michael. Good going, Colin.
does the pubie party have balls?
A way to combat this is to say if you want the fairness doctrine for airways, we need to apply it to federally funded schools, elementary- college. that should shut them up.
The FCC will be supplanted with the “Federal Department of Approved Information”.
Exactly. It needs to be applied everywhere. Not just conservative talk radio.
Personally, I welcome the Rats trying to impose the un-Fairness Doctrine for just this reason. I'm guessing that Rush, Sean and some of the other high powered talkers would find the cash and the lawyers to get this to the Supremes (hopefully before nObama can stack it) once and for all.
Spiking dissent in the grand tradition of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.
This counter-culture revolutionary is rapidly revealing himself to be extremely dangerous to our liberty.
I agree. This needs to be challenged right away.
Unfortunately, the USSC upheld the so-called Fairness Doctrine in ‘69 (Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC).
Hopefully the current Court would come to a different result.
Thank-you for your service.
I wish that you and your fellow soldiers had a man of honor as your Commander in Chief come January 20th instead of a Marxist.
65 million clueless voters let you guys down.
