A roomful of academics erupted in angry boos Tuesday morning after political analyst Michael Barone said journalists trashed Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republicans' vice presidential nominee, because "she did not abort her Down syndrome baby."
Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and ... went over the line."
Barone was speaking at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, to the 121st annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, which calls itself the nations oldest higher-education association.
The liberal media attacked Sarah Palin because she did not abort her Down syndrome baby," Barone said, according to accounts by attendees. "They wanted her to kill that child. ... I'm talking about my media colleagues with whom I've worked for 35 years.
Barone, a popular speaker on the paid lecture circuit, is a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report and principal coauthor of The Almanac of American Politics."
About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.
Barone did not dispute the accounts of his remarks. Asked about the comments, Barone said in an e-mail that he "was attempting to be humorous and, as many in public do, went over the line."
"Sorry for that," Barone said. "I was trying to focus on press hostility to Palin. I agree with [Washington Post media reporter and CNN 'Reliable Sources' host] Howard Kurtz that the press was much more interested in tracking down negative information on Palin than Obama."
Palins youngest child, her son Trig, was born in April. Televised shots of him during her convention speech helped endear her to conservatives. During the campaign, she said she would use the vice presidency to help families with special-needs children.

>>Eleanor is the Washington Generals of talk shows.<<
bimboeruption knows squat about sports and had to Google that to find out what the joke was.
NOW I'm laughin'.
There is a lot of truth to what he said.
The extreme reaction to Sarah Palin cannot be explained merely on the basis of opposition to her views. It was hatred.
I think the fact that she did not abort Trig brought about feelings of guilt among many women who aborted their Down's Syndrome children (or those who had positive tests for the possiblity of Down's).
I hope so or most of my family is going to burn in hell...die-hard, union, New Deal dems who put their party above their Lord.
Sounds like he was genuinely curious, as to why such a successful, bright and attractive woman, the governor of a state, was facing such unprecedented bile. He had an epiphany.
>>I got you one better....I moved across the country!<<
And I bet, like me, you're enjoying every minute of it!
Michael, no need to apologize. You were right.
Not now.
Palin’s stance on abortion was a major cause of the media hating her. Perhaps the #1 cause.
And Reagan lost to Ford in the primaries in 76. 80...different story.
AMEN
Why did Barone apologize??? He spoke the truth. There are Trig-Haters out there. There is TDS—Trig Derangement Syndrome.
Charles Krauthammer said the same thing, basically, though he restricted his comments to the most fanatical feminist Trig-Haters.
Barone should retract his apology!
You missed our earlier discussions didn’t you. We are now a full week into PURGING THE RINOs. There’ll shortly be plenty of room for new ideas.
Someone needs to explain to me how the Pro-Life agenda will be enforced. Will pregnant women be imprisoned so they can’t go out of state to terminate their preganancies?
When Sarah Palin says she opposes abortion in case of rape, what does she mean?
I understand teaching women to respect life and to give women information about keeping the baby or putting it up for adoption. What I don’t understand is the method of forcing women to carry their unborn babies. It really makes no sense. Maybe the Pro-life agenda is a something that no one wants to think through? Perhaps because it is based on religious and moral beliefs that defy thinking realistically about the issue?
Frankly I'm done with the Leftwingtard distinctions based on age ~
I think he should write a book about Palin's run for the vice-presidency.
Yours is a minority opinion, on this site. Albeit, I think 2016 will give her more experience and credibility, but her core qualities and principles are second to none.
How about the rino doing the purging?
Sorry, I couldn't help myself.
It's pretty much the mark of a Leftwingtard that he or she leaps to the conclusion that we'd have to punish the women in some manner, or maybe excute them.
You really do have to get your eye off "death as the only solution". There are ways that are far, far worse.
The 2012 campaign is not over. The vituperation will not stop unless the MSM succeeds in rendering Sarah Palin completely impotent.
Does anyone on this board seriously think that abortions will be illegal in the United States again?
I think the Lord will be back before that happens
